Bass advice

Hey guys ive recently decided i want to go back to a four string bass. I'm in the process of selling my 5 string. I am hoping to have 450-500 to spend on a new bass. Any suggestions? I play a lot of alt rock and grunge as well as some folk and acoustic projects. I really do Justin Chancellor from Tool and write a lot of lines inspired from his work, I really like playing a stingray and I really love the Ray 34ca ive also been looking at a trobute g&l l2000but im open to all suggestions.

My only bass is an Ibanez SR500 that I've had for about 5 years now. I love it. It's super comfortable and lightweight, stays in tune, and has a good sound that I can easily switch from smooth to aggressive. I'd recommend you try one out, especially if you're a small person or have small hands like me.

Either an Ibanez SR500 or a Squire J Deluxe . Both great basses at any price and both under $500. (Well, the Ibby might be a few bucks more and the Squier goes for around $350.) Those are my favorite cheaper basses.

Honestly, I would go to a local music store and figure out which basses feel the best (obviously you can change out hardware). I know for me, if I had $450 or so to buy a 4-string, I would find a used MIM P-Bass and change out the pick-up.

I have to agree with the Ibanez SR500. I collect Fender basses but I have two SR500s. I play around a lot of sand and saltwater and wanted something inexpensive. I found while inexpensive they give a full spectrum of sound, stay in tune and I have had no trouble with either one. If they were passive they would be perfect.

I personally prefer G&L L2000 Tribute (especially if you find out a carved top one)

I love it, it sports a dual (passive) humbucker (intead of just one) and its electronic - wired serial/parallel too - can get passive

But I've to say Sterling Ray34ca is something I found attractive.

Cheers,
Wallace
