Bass advice! Help!

Hey there! I am ready to buy a new four string bass, one that I hope to gig with for years to come. What I'm looking for in a bass is:

Maple neck
Relatively light weight
Under 500 dollars
Active electronics
Very "growly" or mid heavy bass (this is a very important factor)

I'd like to buy used to get the most bang for my buck. So far I've looked at the Sterling Ray34CA, the Sterling SUB, the g&l l2000 tribute and the Ibanez atk. I really just want to know what all the options are in my price range and pick the best bass for me. I play many different styles but this will be an alternative rock bass so I'd rather it be a one trick pony that really knows that trick than something with a ton of options.

I don't think any any basses you picked are Particularly light, but I'd say you have an excellent list there. Maybe throw a p bass of some sort with active electronics on there. I'm fairly sure the deluxe series has actives, or they can always be retrofitted. Out of that list I'd probably go with one of the old American subs if you can find one

Peavey DynaBasses growl like nobody's business... But they're not lite. So I guess that's off the list.

If you buy a SVT it really doesn't matter what kind of bass you have .

When I think "midrange growl" I think Fender Jazz. But you'd probably need to settle for passive if you want to get one in your price range.

My old G&L growled like a mutha. Plus it gives a lot of options as far as tone goes.

Not sure why but I've never been into P basses. I have looked at the fender MIM jazz bass and was thinking about sticking an audere preamp and Delano FE (9.5mm pole pieces) pickups. This would cost around a total of 600 dollars. I think fate has decided for me as I have found a g&l l2000 tribby for 350

I love my l2000 for just the tone you describe in the OP. I think you'll be happy.

I mean, a secondhand MIM active deluxe Jazz bass, with three band equalizer and Ceramic Noiseless pickups (very good indeed) can be easily found in the Op pricerange

Cheers,
