1) +1 for the graphite/composite neck (in my case a MM Cutlass)
2) Hamer Cruise 2TEK -- +1 for the monster bridge
3) + 1 for Carvins. My current one has ebony fretboard, rock maple body, set-in neck and heavy brass bridge, all of which add to sustain. I had another Carvin years ago and it too had great sustain; I am thinking the massive bridge was the biggest reason.
By the way (ironically, but not joking) if anybody has a mute assembly for a pre-Ernie Sabre or Cutlass, I have been looking for one. Using foam at the bridge for now.

LIGHTWAVE Sabre bass, the optical pickups allow the string to vibrate unhampered by magnetic drag of regular pickups. Hands down the best sustain of any bass I've played or recorded with in the last 30 yrs.
I have one forsale if you are interested, PM me if you have interest. |

But a graphite neck will get you a clean, clear, beautiful sustaining sound like no clever combination of wood and glue will ever do. Plus the low fast action, the reliable shape......
My Status bass makes my P Bass handle like a 1950s car.
I like 1950s cars too, mind.

It was a production, bolt on bass that killed. I've also had a few Modulus basses and the graphite neck is pretty amazing. Even, sustain, playability. I also got pretty good sustain from a Roscoe. I think your technique will help as much as your bass. |

With a fresh battery and just a little volume push, you can hang with Gary Moore-like sustained notes with a Zon.. |

Otherwise, Peavey Cirrus.

| | | | My 78 Precision with ash body and maple neck has the best sustain of any bass I have ever played, active or passive. Heavy bass, (10.5 lbs) but it has what you are looking for. Records incredibly well too.

| | | I've had more basses than I can remember from my 44 years of being a pro bass player. Many sustained well, others not so well. Each had their pros and cons. I've used set neck basses, bolt-ons, and neck-throughs, and there is no guarantee that one type will be better than the other. Ricks sustain nicely. I've played Carvin neck-throughs for years and, depending on the types of wood comprising the neck, they differ but all sustain very well. But, maybe surprisingly, my Traben Array Obsession truly sustains better than any bass I've played. The sustain is even across all strings and notes - something that most other "great sustaining basses" don't do. Just my experience... http://www.trabenbass.com/array_obsession.php | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
