i have a gretsch g5123b and love it, everything about it. i have a fuzz and an octave pedal and love to see what sounds i could make out of this guitar. i could play stoner/punk/surf with the gretsch with fuzz, or without.
anyways, with our last drummer, i was noticing that may gretsch wasn't doing it for our bands faster songs. maybe if i adjust the knobs, or even use a pick or EQ or a new amp, i can get an appropriate tone, but since we don't have a drummer, at the moment, i can't test for an in band scenario.
the bass is great clean, great for our "slower" stuff. my gretsch is the only one for me in my book, but for the sake of the band/style i may have to get a second bass.
i was thinking another gretsch because i love the sound but not sure if would help me in this predicament. my brother has an gibson sg. so here are my picks:
Gretsch G6128B Thunder Jet™ Bass
Gretsch G6199B Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Bass
Gibson USA SG Standard Bass
Hofner violin bass
Hofner club bass
i played the gibson sg bass at guitar center, different sound and would work for what we're doing, just the price. the guy at the store says that hofner makes great hollow bodys and chambered guitars, but they're smoother than gretsch. also, i don't like how the violins bass strings are small and close together, but i could get used to that. what do you guys think of bands with matching guitars? i think zz top. btw my bro i the guitarist of our band.
should i get a 5 string? i saw squier bass VI, i love the wammy. if i get a 5 string i could play janie's got a gun, 6 string i could play back in the saddle. also, resonator basses, awesome.
if their is any bass guitars you recommend let me know.
here's some more questions you could answer:
Where to find a drummer?
What wah pedal should i get for my bass?
