Almost more important is the amp set up - you need either a distortion pedal or preamp that you can blend with the clean tone OR 2 amps - one clean/one dirty. For a good pedal that will do this, I'd recommend the Ashdown James Lomenzo hyperdrive.

A Danelectro Longhorn with only 3 strings.

This works well but to really nail the Live at Leeds sound, brand new Roto 66 strings at every gig are crucial. If you don't want to be forever buying new strings, I would advise a Jazz bass such as he used on the original 'My Generation' to give that grindy twang he was known for. You won't get that sound on a Pbass without 'fresh out of the packet' stainless steel strings. |

A maple or rosewood P bass is the easiest route. I highly recommend Cataldo basses, Carlo built me a beautiful fenderbird (JAEbird as Carlo calls 'em) and a absolutely amazing NR Thunderbird. I WISH I played in a Who tribute! This is the closest we get. Our version ala Live at Leeds of Summer Time Blues. Note the '67 nonreverse Thunderbird it is being run through a Hiwatt DR201 and a Hiwatt 2150 cab. Sick a s a dog here 101 degree fever. http://youtu.be/B_0LWD4talY

| | | | The Ox's favorite bass was Frankenstein, his (originally) sunburst/maple neck p-bass.
So i would go for something like that.
Besides, his tone in "Live at Leeds" is awsome... if i were in a tribute band i'd try to emulate that tone.
