Nope.

This is Frankenstein:

He said this was his favorite one and wanted to be buried with it.

But he wasn't, and they sold it in auction after his death.

You've not said what era your friend is trying to tap into. 1965 Mod Who is different from the haggard rock legends of the '70s.

The funny thing while Entwistle will always be associated with the iconic Buzzard bass- he actually only played it for a BRIEF part of his overall stage time. Much more of what he played and recorded is various P-Basses Thunderbirds, etc...

Entwistle owned too many basses to count. Your friend should buy whatever he's most comfortable playing. Of course, if he's comfortable playing a Precision or T-bird it wouldn't hurt.

Since an original "slab" precision is not available aside from the custom shop, the closest thing to achieve a late 60's era Ox tone would be a maple necked precision with vintage (Fralin stock wind, Fender '62) style pickups. This was pretty much his most beloved and recognizable (live at Leeds) precision format before he jumped to Tbirds. Basically it comes down to which era you are aiming for but a precision will cover them all well.

Surely that's the neck that went on to be part of Frankenstein? He put it together from the parts of two or three smashed basses, so it's that maple neck and a pink ("salmon" body from an early '60s slab Precision. So she actually looked like this:

Dean makes a couple for under $1000

Cataldo makes some nice ones under $1000

And Epiphone makes a nice t-bird for under $1000

And Fender makes a nice p-bass for under $1000

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

Thanks for all the pointers. I was never familar with the JAE epic bass chronology. It will be interesting what my buddy selects. I have a hunch he may poo poo the Dean spider because of it's color.

We'll see. If it was me, I'd look into a used Gibson T-Bird, but have no clue what those go for.

I honestly don't think the Dean will even be in the ballpark sonically. An Epiphone would have a hard time getting it as well unless you replaced the pickups with the Lollar or Lull T-birds, which are true representations of the original T-Birds pickups. I shouldn't say they won't be in the "ballpark"...they will possess some of a humbuckers characteristics but nothing like the low growl of the originals, IMO.

I got my Gibson T-Bird Studio for $950 on ebay. It's in great shape. Of course the used american Fenders can be had in the 700-800 range. Sometimes you can find standard Gibson Thunderbirds for a really good price if you don't mind a headstock repair.

True. And Im sure if he were still alive today he would be playing something completely different.

I'm surprised there aren't a lot of Thunderbirds listed on the classifieds of Talkbass. Those that are listed have had the price removed.

I watched a documentary on the making of "Quadrophenia" a few days ago and the music is still running around in my head. Can you see the real me, doctor?

I vote Fenderbird!

These guys make slab basses. They used to make a copy of Berry Oakley's Tractor Bass too.
