| | | | I still have my mighty ESP F-104. That's still the most comfortable bass I own, and I own a Spector Euro. I just feel more "at home" on the ESP. It's mainly the neck finish and the smaller frets. The thing sounds like a dying cat though.

Ugly bass, but it records very well. My Dad bought it for me when I was in high school. Don't think I'll ever sell this bass, even though I haven't used it live in at least 10yrs. Although it's my go to bass in the studio. |

| | | | Still got my pawn shop p.o.s. special I started on. Looks, sounds, and plays like crap but I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. |

It may not sound amazing, but it can be set up well enough to promote good technique. In my opinion, that's more important than tone in the beginning stages of bassism. Tone will come with time.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Northeastern PA | | | Back in 'early '73, my parents got me a '71 Gibson SB-300 which I woodshedded on until late '75 when I traded it it for a 4001. Coulda/shoulda been end of story. Well, I can thank dearly departed Dad for this, but he made me record the serial number for safety's sake, which I dutifully did on the best scrap of paper I could imagine, an actual pic of me playing the bass. Put it in a photo album and forgot about it for 33 years. Last fall I got curious and started searching Ebay to see if I could find another to rekindle my youth. Well a few duds and beaters came up and I passed. Well one comes up in September at a pawn shop in North Carolina. Looks well preserved, so I email the guy for some more info. He provided the date and serial number, having done his homework. I get the old pic out to see how close it is in age to my old one, and cue the singing angels and all the biblical analogies you can muster, not only is it the same vintage, it's my old bass! Well, I was jumping around the house like a fool and the wife comes running in. After explaining the story, and the odds of this bass travelling from PA to NC across 33+ years and surving in nearly unused shape, she did the only thing possible, she bought it for me on the spot. I put the bid in, won the bass, and I play it all the time. Not a bad little bass either! So, yes, I still have my first bass. |
