The best I've ever played or owned is my Fodera Monarch. It really has ruined me for all other basses.

But to properly not play the notes on the 24th fret, you must first have that fret. Otherwise you don't have the choice of not playing those notes. I'm thinking of getting a 36-fret neck to really expand the range of notes I don't play.

find a killer deal on a used Euro Spector. occasionally they pop up in that price range and you gotta be ready to jump.

Maybe different in the US but I struggled to find a non-custom 24-fret PJ (I also wanted 5-string and passive) within a sensible budget. In the end my custom model was only £800.
