Best all-around bass for under $400

The title is self explanatory. Best bass for under $400. Fits into 5 different categories for quality...
-Tone (versatile|round, punchy {jazz, Rick, etc.})
-Comfort (no sharp edges or flimsy necks)
-Looks (preferably nat. gloss/satin)
-Reliability/construction (won't fall apart)
-Electronics (no crappy wiring ea. Affinity)

The world is your oyster! Do you have a body style preference? Pickup configuration preference?

You can find a used G&L Tribute in that price range for sure. You won't do any better for that price.

If you want a passive bass with jazz pick-ups, I would recommend the peavey millennium bxp basses. I own a peavey millennium bxp 4-string bass for my brother's band and it sounded pretty cool. not only does my band mates from my brother's band like the bass, but so does friends and family. I will be purchasing a 5-string version for my band real soon.

I was going to recommend the yamaha BB414, but apparently it's the BB424 now. What's the difference...?

Judging from the specs, it's an upgraded 414 - the BB424 has a 5-ply laminated neck, different pickups, a diagonal string-thru bridge, as well as a new pickguard design.

or you might consider a kit? Carvin has a kit where you can choose options, finish the wood how you prefer etc right around $400. I have two with swamp ash bodies natural finish and I love them both. For the price you cant beat it. Theyre real easy to put together (if I can do it.... and its nice knowing you kinda built it yourself.

just a thought

I might have to pick the Matt Freeman sig for this one. I find that bass tempting.

Fender (mim) made in Mexico are made pretty much just like the old Fenders were made. A few cosmetic exceptions and the difference of the pup coils but honestly its a great bass for the money. I just drove back from northern Florida and stopped in a few music stores and played a Mexican J & P and thought they were great when you take into consideration the cost. (Sarasota Fl/ Guitar Center SWR Super Red Head 400.00) sounded pretty nice!!!! Good luck with your search try to hold it in your hand as opposed to shipping one unless you know the brand and model well. Doc
