Best Bass under 300$?

I am looking to probably buy a 2nd bass, as a backup bass to my Sterling RAY34. I am thinking probably a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, or a Vintage Modified P bass. what is the best bass for 300$ or less?

What you said, either VM Jazz or VM Precision and there is no need to spend money on a pickup swap.

VM or CV

You can still find Classic Vibe basses in your price range. You might like them better than the Vintage Modified.

I played some of the new SUBs while I was out looking for short scales, and I was pleased. Though I love my VM Jazz too.

Gotta second the peavey. But you never know what you may find. I bought a used 1970 Guild JS-1 last month for $200. Search around in stores or craigslist and ebay.

He might. He might not. Who knows. A good suggestion, nonetheless. Any of the Vintage Modifieds or Classic Vibes would do anyone well.

I like all of the above suggestions, Squier, SUB, Peavey, and Ibanez. I'd add the Ibanez SRX line which has been discontinued but is still in stores (and available at great prices due to being discontinued). They have the fast Ibanez neck and are very versatile tone wise.
I like the Squier's best for the classic Fenderish tone, but the SRX to me has more different tones.
Oh, and I picked up a Peavey Zodiac that absolutely captures the Fender vibe. Got it used for $70. Plays like a dream.

Something used, whatever you like.

If you are set on new, I don't think you can go wrong with a Squier VM. Who knows, it might even become your #1! These days I come pretty close to splitting my playing time 50-50 between my Warwick Thumb and my Squier VM Jazz.

SBMM have nothing but amazing reviews for the price. I personally have never had the chance to play one but am looking into possibly getting one in the near future. Has anyone played the Spector Preformers? Those look pretty rad too and are under 300 from what I've seen

+1 on the US Peavey Fury. Picked this one up off local CL this weekend for $175 with hard case. Very nice instrument and in near-perfect condition. I also have a Forum I converted to fretless, and 2 T-20's. The Fury is the most expensive one of the bunch.

Old US Peaveys are the best value out there, IMHO. I have a Squier Jag short scale which I'm very happy with, but the Peavey's just have a feel of substance and quality that I don't get with the Squier.
