A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste! | Exactly.
There other suggestions are nice, but if you want the right answer, it's MIA Peavey Cirrus 5.

| | | | I'd say stingray 5. you can see them used for under 1k alot, I'm more of a 4 string guy, so I can't really rec. fender because they're more 4 string. Ibanez makes some good stuff too. I like their btbs, they're pretty cool, and its easy to get those high notes. |

| | | | Spector EuroLX. Find one used in great shape, never look back. Nothing growls like a Spector they say, and I have to agree.

| | | | +1 on Carvin. I have one and do in fact love it. They do suffer in resale, or have their is some evidence the new SB5000 models are holding value. |

I bought one used on eBay for less than $500, and new they are only $750.

Thoughts?
BTW, I'm a little surprised to see no mentions here (or in the article) of the Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass?

You might not get a ton of fancy features with a $1000 limit but a bare bones Carvin will play better than any other major manufacturers basses in that price range in my experience.

I picked them when I had to make the same choice (first good bass, around $1,000 to spend) and it was definitely the right choice. Ten years and a handful of basses later, that first Carvin LB70 is still my No. 1. Plus you get the satisfaction of having much more say in terms of colors, options, woods, etc. than the mostly-stockchoices at that
price point.

However, perusing on-line classifieds, it appears Carvins suffer somewhat on resale value (bad for those ordering new Carvins, but good for those looking at used basses ).
Also, having just picked-up my first bass, I assumed I'd need to shop for a higher-tiered instrument in short order should the bass "stick", but, I'm finding my starter '84 Peavey Fury to be 'the little bass that could'. It is one of the best value instruments I've ever owned...Hard to imagine I'd need to upgrade for some time!

Though I haven't seen or had a chance to play one, they seem to have gotten lots of love here and elsewhere on-line.
disclaimer: I am a sucker for block inlays and a noticeable fretboard radius (-10").
