Now it's entirely possible that he might have a "special" '98 Jazz, but if that's the case why would he want to trade it?
In equal condition, the value of those basses is roughly the same. And unless he can both sell his bass locally and find a used replacement he likes locally, he'll be eating fees and shipping costs plus all the time and hassle.

Good choice sticking with the '09. I believe now we're definitely in one of Fender's better quality periods.

+1

The early 90's Jazz "Plus" models are also an acquired taste.

I took delivery of a new Am Dlx P last March that is an amazing instrument. It took Fender five months to deliver, (because I ordered the clear finish, I was told). Last week, I got the Am Dlx Jazz, (also clear fin), and it took one month to get. (Both from a local store). Both basses are very high quality. The P came out of the box perfectly set up, and almost in perfect tune. The Jazz set up out of the box needs a little tweaking. Fit, and finish are really good on both. Easy to play. Huge range of tones. They look stunning.

I own a 2002 and while it's always been a decent bass, it took quite a bit of tweaking to make it great. But I've noticed if you get one now, they seem to play like mine, no tweaking needed. And as others have said, I've heard that this is true post 2008. I don't know about '98s.

RIGHT NOW!!! Collectors-era items (50s, 60s) are just that: They are the stuff for cork sniffers. They had 30 cent pots, alder wood because Leo couldn't get Cherry at the time, and factory-line assembled.

The 70s are questionable, and that's well documented. 80s? Meh.

The CS stuff and American-Made guitars and basses are rather stellar right now. Heck, even the Squiers are rockin'.

Peace, SG

I saw a pic of the J Bass and it was kind of nice (really well kept and it comes with a case which - mine doesn't). So I will give it a try

Lot's of people seem to agree the 2009 would be a smarter choice (me too, and btw thanks for the input), but what about the value? J Basses are more expensive than P Basses, considering the age difference, would the P Bass worth more in money than the J bass? Are they exactly the same -or a small difference not enough to matter? Remember also that my Bass has no Case, only a Deluxe Bag (I don't like cases too much so I didn't want it when I got it used)

The difference in price between a late 90's J and a recent P is around $100 in favor of the J. Assuming both are in the same condition and the same color. The presence or lack of a case doesn't add a lot to new-ish basses in the $800-and-up range.

Looks like Blizzard Pearl to me. I've got an '08 US Standard Strat in that color also w/ maple board.

Brilliant IMO, but not a limited edition.

Any pics of the Jazz your boy wants to give you?

Anything to make a sale. If it really was a limited edition, they'd have charged you accordingly.

The second half of the 1990s had some wacky details. String through body, exotic colors. Not as bad a skunk stripe with rosewood board (shudder).

I have a 1997 P with string-through body that has a rather useless pickup. However there is little question that it has been made from nice sounding pieces of wood, so after putting in a Seymour Duncan vintage P it's rather nice. There are no manufacturing flaws. As always I would have preferred a high-gloss finish on the neck instead of the satin nonsense.
