Squier VM Jazz 5 - under $350 new and a very well made instrument. I'm not a fan of the stock pickups, so I'd replace those if it was me...

All the best,

Bob

Did NOT like the Ken Smith KSD's I checked out.

Had a VM Jazz 5, nice and light, but I didn't get along with the tic-tac sounding top end, or the pickups that don't quite cover the full width of the strings, resulting in a weak B or G, depending on neck alignment. Easy to do a preamp swap, but not the pickups, with are shorter then regular Fender Jazz V.

The other choices mentioned are all worth a good look.

If you like MM-style basses, I would also mention Ibanez ATK's, or BTB 5's.

Steve,

I'm confused. I've got a set of Lollar single coil 5 string pickups in my VM Jazz 5. They fit like a glove and are the same size as standard Fender Jazz V.

Could you mean the Squier Deluxe 5? That's the one with the preamp and the slap switch.

Bob

I'm currently playing your best option: the Ibanez SR505 or 605 or possibly even 705.

Thinking of getting my OLP Spector set up, but nervous about spending 40 bucks and not noticing much of a difference in string height/buzz.
