| | | | About Jaco, I think it's wothwhile mentioning that in the from around 1980 he also used Mørchs (if you've wondered about that weird bas in the instructional vid he made, that's the one I'm talking about), just for the fun of mentioning it... Marcus Miller also played mørch in his Weather Report days, so actually quite a lot of late Weather Report was made with Mørch's (and sorry guys, I know I just made Jaco tone even more elusive :b)
The story of how he came to play the Mørchs is actually pretty funny:
According to the story he met Michael Friis (a very talented danish fretless player who btw has played exclusively Mørch since the late 70'ies) and played his bass. The next day Jaco called Mørch and said Hey dude make me one exactly alike.
8 months afterward Jaco calls again and says "Hey, I figured I'm gonna need a 4 stringer with the same specs". :P
anyways, back on track:
Michael Friis (Mørch) (well dunno if he's a big name. But he and Dan Rasmussen are the most used session players in Denmark, and are both pretty awesome. And use Mørch.)
TM Stevens (Warwick, Dean Markley Blue Steels) (despite his tenure with Cort he seems to have continued using the Wick's on pretty much everything in that period too)
Ian Hill (Spector)
Justin Chancellor (Wal)
Tal Wilkenfeld (I know she's young, but I don't see her leaving the Sadowsky any time soon.)
Marcus Miller (he's been pretty much using fender since the late 80'ies right?)
Toshiya (Dir En Grey in case you didn't know them :b moved a bit around very early but has stayed with ESP for 10 years (real ESP not the korea/china crap). Has more than one ESP bass though)
X Japan bassist Heath (Fernandes from since he entered the band in 92)
Tetsuo Sakurai (japanese jazz great)(has played Yamaha for what seems like forever, also plays two Foderas but both his 4 stringer and main 6 stringer through more than 30 years have been yamaha)
Enough with japanese bass players... Even though they're awesome and stick with brands more than us other guys apparently...
So I'll round of with German bass player Michael Kunz (Warwick since 86) And Oscar Stagnero (Warwick 90'-now, even though he does have a P bass (well it's a necessity) and some acoustics and other weird stuff)
Btw has anyone noticed that more players seem to stick with Yamaha than anything else? (except for Fender ofc) maybe it's a tip for us other guys xD
Warwicks endorsers don't seem to leave after they've joined the club either. |

He does use other basses for various things, occasionally, but that RM has been with him since the beginning.

Can't remember his name, too lazy to Google.

Nathan East and Yamaha.

As a member of a very forward thinking prog band, he went for sounds of the time.
He uses his Ric on lots of early stuff, but his "found in an flea market" 72 Jazz keeps popping up all over the records.
His experiments with Steinberger and Wal, although interesting, brought him squarely back to his beloved Jazz. I've done similar, and at one point was going to swap out my Jazz, but can never bring myself to part with it.
Does this count? | On your topic of Geddy+Wal
I would consider 2 Rush albums and touring with 2 different Wals more than just an "experiment"
IMO i think the Jazz "fits" more with the Rush sound. It is easily maintained/fixed, replacement parts etc. All around best package for him.

Hasn't Paul Simonon only played Fender P-Basses? On that note by default one could say Sid Vicious only 'played'* one brand. How about Dee Dee Ramone?
*(if you could actually call it 'playing'... but then Fieldy would fall under that category as well... he just kept up the charade for a longer period. )

| The bass in the instructional video wasn't Jaco's... it was Jerry Jemmott's IIRC. And it was an Abe Rivera bass. Jaco's Mørch was a five.
That's right folks... a five.
Marcus Miller gigged with Ken Smith and Fodera fretlesses.
This thread makes it pretty clear that alot of bassists didn't stick to just one brand. In fact many are answering the question with multiple brands. Kind of strange.
