Black Sand Back

I'm looking for advise on a oil wax finish. I have a AAAA quilted maple bass. I plan to completely removing the poly and finish with oil-wax. But I was thinking would it be worth doing a black sand back on the quilted maple before the oil to make the quilting stand out? I don't plan on doing a color.

If you're not doing a colour, I think black would be a bad choice. Maybe a brown a few shades darker than the natural wood.

So instead of doing an uncolored oil wax, possibly doing a light brown stain after the black sand back? Then apply the oil then wax it?

You could use the brown stain instead of the black for the sand back. It would give it a somewhat more natural pop.

Kind of like this:
