Blacktop Jazz vs MIM P bass

I have an opportunity to trade a 60th Anniversary P bass for a Blacktop Jazz.

I love the tone of the P bass, but I have always been a Jazz lover.

Has anyone compared the two of them? Can you get a good P bass tone with the Blacktop? I know it is P bass pickups, but the neck pup is not in the traditional P bass position.

I used to own a blacktop and liked it, but I can't remember the tone and I never could compare it to the P bass

From the sound clips I've heard it sounds like you could get some great P tones from it I like the reverse P configuration I really like these basses I'm thinking of getting one myself.

I finally got to try out a Blacktop Jazz last week. Let me tell you, that sucker roars like a freight train! What was once "piqued curiosity" has turned into full-blown "trying to claw my way out of the GAS Chamber"! I'm seriously considering selling one of my Squier Jazz's to help finance the purchase of a brand-new one. That would be a first for me since all of mine I bought used.

Can you find a local music store that carries a Blacktop Jazz in stock? I'd be damn shocked if they don't have a straight-up P-Bass you could compare it to, so you can see if it's a good fit for your personal tastes. I'd tell you where to go try it out, but I don't know if you live anywhere near me, let alone the East Coast.

Just to clarify, you're talking about the earlier model 60th Ann P, NOT the AVRI-priced one that came out last year?

I've owned Blacktop Jazz for over a year now and it has become my go to bass....especially so after dropping an Audere JZ3 in it! It really expanded the tone possibilities and kinda 'refined' the sounds. The classic rock band I'm in has requested I use it over my modded 55-01 w/Nordstrand DC's, coil tap switch and Bart Pre-amp. Funny thing is I agree, even though the Lakland is nicer to play!! And it seems like I don't even have to turn it up to "cut through the mix". As far as P-bass tone goes, I like it better than my '76 P's sound!

Yeah, StratHater talked about a MIM Precision: so 60th Anniversary goes for "2006"...

I once owned a White Chrome Pearl BlackTop Jazz I equipped with RotoSound Swing66, I fullstep downtuned and on which I added an Hipshot BT7 bass extender (D, G, C, F to C, G, C, F)

I played live with that smart beast... My setup was completed by pedalboard with Yamaha Chromatic Tuner, Jim Dunlop Bass CryBaby, Boss Compression/Sustainer, Tech21 SansAmp Bass Driver Deluxe, Ibanez ToneLok PhatEd into the Peavey Max450
head send/return and thru an EBS ProLine 4x10" cab.

It was partially capable of a P tone, with neck split pickup soloed (the position is different from traditional center spot) yet the pro's that you got the elegant Fender Jazz bass body, paired by the sheer fury of a dual split pickups attack

I deeply recommend it

The reason why I don't have it anymore is because I bought it white chrome pearl just like my wife wedding dress (when I bought the bass, I knew my wife was applyin' for divorce, so for me it was a way to kill the pain inside) whenever I came to know that she was actually applyin for a court divorce, the pain went away I realised what it was all about and (havin my own attorney appointed) I traded the Black Top for ESP/LTD Frank Bello.

Cheers,
Wallace

Anyone know where the Blacktop Jazz is made? And is it a Jazz neck?

Blacktop jazz is MIM and has a jazz neck, which is the only problem with it.

Also the neck pickup is much closer to the neck than a standard P is placed, which may bother some people.
