Body Questions

I was wondering it the double cut, single cut, and or scroll contribute to the sound of a bass. Or is it purely for looks?

thanks,

James

Length of the upper horn is supposed to increase sustain. See Sukop basses for an example of this, very long upper horns.

Body length and overall extension (with tonewoods) is for both balancin' and tone...

These instruments were indeed conceived to be held standin' up, free to move along the stage, so darn equilibrium is quite important

Havin reached an equilibrium of some sort (battle won against double bass here) next step was quality tonewoods (these "strange guitars" had to sound in a faithful way, not just because of electricity, after all... always keep in mind the struggle against double bass) finally, playability

We got these brand new guitars playin' bass parts, right? They can be held standin' just like proper guitars do, right? We got tonewoods and pickups and amps to let'em roar, right?
Now let players reach for upper frets with ease: that's "horns".

Cheers,
Wallace

I don't think it's any coincidence that the end of the upper horn on my Ibby SR's are in line with the 12th fret for balancing purposes.

In my mind, it would certainly seem that a singlecut-bodied bass would have better tonal characteristics due to so much of the body being in contact with the neck. Just my 2 pennies.

Even then, their 6ers balance terribly standing up!
