Are you experiencing one of those positions being noisy?
I haven't noticed anything but I'll take a listen tonight and get back to you. I haven't really played at substantial volume yet either just messing around (I live in an apt with angry neighbors).

Dremel the bridge, really?

So I'm changing the strings and find that I either need to use a tapered B string which I don't like the sound of or use something smaller than my normal D'Addario balanced set with a 130 ... or... dremel my new bridge?

After about an hour of playing time the verdict is still out as I needed a five and can't sink $1500-$2500 in another bass right now this was a great deal on a brand new bass. So far so good.

Yeah, it's a tight fit. Try turning the sadle screw as far forward as possible, slip the string in place, and draw it back into the proper intonation position.

Or, if it's a case of the windings at the ball end being to thick to slip through, try squeezing the rough/thick wound parts of the string with a needle nose pliers. I've gotten them to just squeeze through that way.

Thanks, I tried both of those tricks already. What pickups and pre did you end up with on your JJX-5?

I have a first gen Brute that I found, shall we say, lacking in the stock electronics department. So I upgraded to an all Delano system: JMVC5 FE single coil jazz pups, and the Sonar 3-band eq with the 3-way -- 300/500/800 Hz -- mid switch. I usually leave that at the 300 setting for a nice cut-through the mix boost and low-mid punch. It's a quick, punchy, very articulate setup. I also upgraded to all black hardware: Hipshot A style bridge, ultra-lite tuners, and bought a set of Knobeez black rubber knobs.

I haven't posted a pic in quite some time, so here it is again for any who haven't seen my super modded Brute:

Not a big fan of the stock bridge for this very reason. I converted mine to string-through for the B-String only, ala Mike Lull style!

I'm running a set of DR Hi Beams on mine with the .125 B and it fits. I'm having a KXB5 made so I don't have the funds to upgrade my MJX5 just yet but I have plans. My options are:

Barts (classic) and NTMB
Delanos with Glock pre
Delanos with Delano pre
Hanson System
Reed James Pickups with aggie pre

Have no clue what I'll go with. If you have opinions please share.

Kevin Brubaker will tell you go with the Barts. Personally...I'd either do that or SGD's.

i'm leaning that way. I really do like the sound of Barts and I believe that's what Kevin had in mind when he developed the Brute. I also know he likes LP pickups but I think they may be having organizational issues. I know he customized a Brute and put LPs in it. Heard they (LPs) sound clear as a bell.

Hey what do you guys think of SIT SS strings??? I know Kevin uses them on his new USA basses, and they are somewhat inexpensive compare to let's say DR. I'm wondering about the 5 string set with the .120 B string.

I tried the nickel strings and I was truly impressed. I normally use stainless, but the local shop only had those in stock, I plan on ordering some Stainless ones. Sound good, Inexpensive and an Ohio based company

I finally sold my G&L, so I now officially have SC Brute ordered!

And I'm immediately dropping a Glock pre in it when I get it...

I've used the nickels before and really liked them. Their lack of anything over a .130 keeps me from using them any more though.

Get them from Bass Strings Online, you can build a custom set and get the TB user discount!

Thanks. That's where I buy my strings. Looks like I'll be trying a set of SITs on my Brutes.

Congrats. The SC's are a different animal than the standard Brutes. I'm really digging mine and the black satin on the backof the neck feels so good to me. For my KXB5 build I'm getting the black satin finish on the back of it's neck.
