Buying an active fretless?
I need to reaquire a fretless and have my eyes on a used Spector Legend Classic fretless for around $470. I've always played Fender fretless instruments and wonder if an active fretless would be, well, too much? Anyone ever tried one of thse or something similar? Looks like a pretty good deal to me.

I've played numerous active fretless basses, from Warwick SS1 to Stingrays and Sterlings to L2Ks. They were never too much, but I just seem to prefer passive these days. I'd give that Spector a shot if I were you.

Nothing wrong with using an active fretless. I have three of them.

I have both, a Pedulla Pentabuzz and a Squier Jazz, and I like them both. Different flavors of goodness. I'd go for it. Hopefully you can play it first, of course.

I have played both lined and unlined and have pretty good intonation. I've never played Spectors, though I have heard that their "entry-level" legend-classic line is pretty good overall.

I own fretless active USA Spector and it's my favorite fretless tone now. I played Pedulla Buzz before, also liked it but prefer Spector tone. It also depends what tone are you looking for.

My fretless has an ACG EQ02 filter preamp in it, which seems ideally suited to fretless tone.

I have a Spector NS-5J2 US BO with dual EMG J's and and OBP-3 pre. I freakin LOVE it!!!
IMO, do yourself a favor and give it a try...I'm betting you'll love it too!

Every passive fretless BG becomes active as soon as you plug it into your amp and hit the power switch. So if you like the bass, go for it.

I have Warmoth J bass with an unlined ebony fingerboard and active EMGs. It's the only bass I play, and I receive frequent compliments on its sound. Blending the volume controls and switch my right hand position gives me as many tones variations as I need. I'd probably be just as happy with passive pickups, but I don't have the motivation to switch.
