| | | | Well, this story has a happy ending. I was able to put a bid on a Stingray Classic on ebay, and it was not contested, which means I was able to afford one. It's a black one with a rosewood fingerboard. This means I got exactly what I was looking for, and I'm glad I was a little patient.
