THE CARVIN SB5000 IS IN EFFECT!!!!!!!!!

The SB5000 is now on Carvin's website!!! It's not the lightest 5-string, but it is sweet nonetheless!!!!!!!

http://www.carvinguitars.com/catalog...p?model=sb5000

As I have said before, I have never really been into jazz type basses-but I am seriously thinking about this one!!!!!!!

It has kind of a retro-modern-jetsons thing going on. Not bad.

The headstock reminds me of a Thunderbird for some reason.

On the clips I listened to, Sekou Bunch was killin' on the SB4000! Great playing and great tone! I'm eager to play the fiver.

I bet it is a killer bass, however, the spacing looks like it might be in the 17-17.5 range. If that is the case, I think Carvin made a mistake. With boutique style jazzes, spacing should always be at least 18mm and 19mm is preferred by most players, IME.

The upward-swept top horn still does nothing for me, but at least this has 22 frets - IMO if Carvin's trying to branch out into the "SuperJazz" market at least 22 frets are needed, whereas the SB4000 only has 20 which automatically would take it out of the running for me.

How awesome is it that you can add an HB2 pickup in the bridge??? Too bad you can't split the coils, though...

It's got a pretty wide neck - 3" @ 22nd fret. Like their "asymmetrical wide neck" they offer on the NT's
The B-5 has 2.7" at 22nd fret.

Well looking at the specs it looks like the dimensions are the same as the other models that use the (asymmetrical) wide neck (3" at the heel). So could be they're using the wide 5-string bridge which has a 3/4" spacing. That's practically identical to the spacing used on the 4 strings and probably very close to the original Jazz spacing?

I can't get over the butt-ugly reverse going upper horn, but it's also good to see Carvin getting into the jazz bass-ish market. I'm definitely a Carvin convert now that I have one and play one firsthand. Some of my other gear is definitely deprecated now and will be going up for sale shortly.

The headstock looks kinds cool on the 4, but the body does nothing for me. I guess I am just brainwashed by the traditional jazz bass body.

I think the headstock looks kind of phallic....

But I do like the body; almost like a Warwick and a Jazz bass had an offspring.

Great if it's wide spacing! I priced a couple with some pretty nice options and they all came in well under $1,100. I se buying one for sure.

I think I read somewhere that the width of the SB5000 at the last fret is 3" wide which makes it almost exactly the same width at the last fret of the BTB fivers, so I'd assume they have the same string spacing.

EDIT: I didn't see that eastcoasteddie beat me to it, apologies.

I've been waiting for pics of the new SB series 5er to be released. I absolutely love it. The upper horn is a tad bit strange, but it's already growing on me. I can't wait to get one!!

IMO, most headstocks look phallic, regardless of brand.
And, to think I just put my MTD Artist on Craigslist so I can thin the herd, now this.

The 4-string version is available with several different headstock designs. I haven't checked the website yet, but the fiver probably is, too.

The HB2 has normally come with a coil splitter on Carvin basses. Did you see information that this was no longer available?

In the Catalog, it says "HB2 bridge pickup option (coil split not available)"

Probably has to do with the preamp itself, not set up for coil splitting...
