I'm completely cool with the wait since I have others that fill the bill.

| | | Here's a quick cell-phone picture of my new SB5000! I got it a few days ago, and I'm loving it. It sounded great in church rehearsal, and the neck is incredibly comfortable. |

I'm the happy new owner of a used SB5000, and I'm not sure what maintenance the neck needs--should I oil it? It's a birdseye board on a maple neck.
I'm guessing the finish is tung oil since that's stock, but I don't have any prior experience with that finish. It feels very smooth under my hand, with no drag at all when I shift position--what I always tried to get by buffing a poly finish with 4-aught steel wool. Any other way I can tell tung oil from a satin finish?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

Hard to beat that. | I had my eye on that one. It was on Craigslist for $400. I emailed to see if he would ship it but never received an answer.
I have been wanting to try a SB for a while and just bought a Classic Sunburst off ebay. Can't wait to get it! |

| | Registered User | | | | Hi guys, I've been lurking here quite a while, and as a way of introduction, I'm going to join this group! I just got an SB5000 and I think I'm in love.
I've played a Fender P/J Special ("cowpoke") as my main axe for the past 16 years (the only other new piece of gear I've owned), and I've been very happy with it, but I play in a band with two guitarists who both have Carvins, and they both rave about them. The SB series really caught my eye, and I've been kind of obsessed with the idea of having one made for a while. I've built this exact bass (as well as a few others) so many times at Carvin's site, only to empty my cart and decide that what I have is fine (it is). The color scheme is obviously a tribute to my cowpoke. It's kind of an iconic look and I didn't want to just leave that behind. It does, however, kind of look like a banana. That's ok.
I've done a ton of research, and I have to say that the 6 threads/hundreds of posts here have been an invaluable resource. So, thank you to everyone who has posted reviews, opinions, speculation, etc in these threads. I read every post, and even the negative opinions helped my decision. I'm typically a lurker, but I'm coming out of the shadows to express my gratitude to you all. Seriously, this site more than any other influenced my decision.
Now, that said, I didn't actually purchase this. I received it as a gift. Specifically, it was presented to me as a 10-year anniversary gift from my work! Day jobs have their benefits! My obsession with this model was pretty well known, so they managed to figure out what options I wanted (sneaky!) and built my exact bass. Needless to say, I was floored. I didn't cry, but it was tough.
I've been playing this now for a week, and I'm getting used to the 5-string much more quickly than I expected. I was afraid it would be too much of an adjustment, but it feels very natural to me. I can't put it down! This bass has far exceeded my expectations. It's so fun to play and sounds so good. I've got a gig this weekend, and I can't wait to knock the back out of the club. |
