I sure enjoyed the Updates I gigged for a few years. Heavy, but very nice. That super goosed Marcus thing.

I gave up on this brand due to the complete lack of customer service a while back. I hope he is getting things back on track. He made a heck of a bass, and that Greengrove spec with the Celinder/Armstrong pickups was unique in the industry.

What a great instrument. Enjoy it!
You have great taste! Hard to imagine parting with it.

Changed it back to the white pickguard again. It just looks very 'classic' that way.

Yeah, the white one is nicer.
Original there where SD Antiquity II in them. The AC's are nice, but the Seymour Duncan's are even better IMHO.

Interesting. How so? I can definitely dig on the SD pickups though...

They just work perfect in the J Classic.
Gives a nice full bass in the lower registers, and I like the snappy treble without getting harsh.

the Amrstrong/Greengrove electronics setup is nice but sometimes i wish Chris had made more 5 string classics - I mean 5 string passive J's. there's some responsiveness imho you won't get with juiced up electronics ... plus the access to all the possible choices of aftermarket pickups to best suit the tonal character you're after (nordstrand, aguilar, SD, ...

sweet bass, enjoy!

+1 That is one of the reasons I ended up moving on from my Updates, but man, they do 'that thing' better than anything, and those HC Armstrong pickups are the most 'single coil' of any HC's I've heard.

The Updates are, for the most part, heavy, and very goosed (via the Greengrove, that has a unique 'active blend control' and also an unusual treble circuit, with a strong treble boost with frequency and level set in the control cavity with DIP switches, and then a passive tone control to 'control' the treble response).

I've never experienced a pre like that, and if you like it 'Marcus aggressive' it is great. Unfortunately, due to the active blend (which gives you true, infinite blending between the pickups versus the almost 'on/off' function of most V/V and blend controls), there was no 'bypass' capability with that pre... so it was 'Marcus all the time'

Nice instruments again, but a REALLY badly run business, at least a few years ago.

So my '70's style J Update arrived this week and I took it along to rehearsals with my funk/rock band.

Felt very nice to play, sounded good in the mix (to my ears) and slightly heavy weight didn't bother me at all.

At the end of the evening my guitarist came over to look at it more closely and said he thought it sounded better than anything I'd played with the band before. As I have always used the same amplification this means it's definitely the bass itself that was making the difference.

Given that previously I've used a Ritter, '63 Fender J, a pair of 'vintage (83 & 86) Foderas and an Alleva Coppolo, this was praise indeed

Saturday night, the kid is off to bed, and I'm at home practicing. Life is good.

Really enjoying the paring of my Celinder J Classic, the Alleva Coppolo single coils, and the John East J-Retro I dropped in. Super tasty and just right for me; a great blend of vintage/modern. Not too modern, I have a Dingwall SJ4 for that...
