There was some info about in another F Bass thread I believe, if not this one in the earlier pages?
34" Scale, more Jazz bass sounding I am told. Same F Bass Preamp as the BN series. |

I've owned several different high-end basses, and thus far I've got to say that F-Bass appears to have them beat. |

This image is stuck in my head. Thanks a lot!
Sounds and plays ok then? |

Actually, this is one of the nicest playing basses I've had the pleasure of owning.
And it's no slouch in the sound department, either. I am quickly falling in love with the preamp in this thing. The single coil mode is new to me--my old BN6 (97 model) didn't have that option--it was humcancelling only. This one has a lot more options on tap than I remember that one having.
Absolutely no buyer's remorse with this purchase!! |

| | | | I jsut played a BN6 & BN5 both fretted much preferred the 6, both were ash with metal bridges, the 6 had a maple fretboard and the 5 a RW, the 5 actually weighed more
something might be happening, but in the fretless dept
that spalted maple top is stunning |

Maybe I WOULD buy one of these Fender-looking F-basses!"
I like this configuration because the black knobs blend in to the black pickguard. These knobs (I'm assuming) are high, mid and low boost.
Then I like then the contrast of the 3 silver knobs against the black pick guard because it completes that Fender-esque look of the Jazz bass.
Do they make a 6 string fretless of these I wonder? I'm thinking about switching my AC6 to coated flatwounds to nudge it closer to an upright sound, which means I'll need another 6 string fretless for the "other" stuff. :-D
Don't you just LOVE lust?!

3 of my 10 basses are F-Basses. Although I feel all of my basses are "nice" (Fodera, Pedulla, etc.), in real life my F-basses get played the most. I think this is why:
1. They play very well. They make tough things easier, are the best balanced basses I've played when hanging from my shoulder.
2. The sound very nice. These basses really do sound great, with a strong nod to vintage Fender, although that isn't necessarily the case. My Alain Caron model (AC6) has a voice of its own, and my BN6 has wood choices which tip it toward a more "modern" sound. I'll try to get around to posting mp3s so you can see what I mean.
3. The look great. Whenever I bring band or family members in to help me choose which basses to bring to gigs, they always choose F-Basses because they look so cool.
4. They have subtle innovations which suit me very well. For example, on a 6 string bass, 35 inches may be great for the B string, but it makes the C string sound tinny and artificial to me. It doesn't have a bass tone. On the other hand, 34 inch scale 6-string basses have nice C strings, but the B's of some lack the punch and oomph of 35's. Enter F-Bass and the 34.5" scale. The B is perfect, and the C sounds like a bass. This may be the main reason I've been starting to favor F-Bass above all others -- particularly for 6 string basses.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: May 2006 Location: Las Vegas, NV | | | For those of you new to F Bass: I had the pleasure of being a brand new bass player when I went out auditioning a bass to buy. I had had a Fender Custom Shop '64 NOS Jazz Bass on order before I went out on this trip to find a bass, just because i knew a P Bass or J Bass was the 'gold standard' of basses, if you will. I had the very good fortune to have a decent amount to spend. I played a whole bunch of different basses, and without even knowing what the 'experts' had to say about basses, I picked an F Bass as my favorite, in all aspects, appearance, fit and finish, balance, ease of playing, and, this is where my neophyte status doesn't hold much water, tone. I ended up ordering a BN5 after that. I love the Fender Jazz as well, but the F Bass is a whole different animal, IMHO.

The Vintage F-5 truly has it's own identity and felt like a handmade j-bass with F bass appointments. Tonewise it had the grit, punch and overall presence that defines a great j-bass IMO. ... In short, George's Vintage F-5 is a very welcome addition to the j-bass fraternity. Trust me, you'll get it when you play one.

I have 2 Fender jazz basses, one a 1975, and I have a BN5 which I LOVE. Is there a way you can help me understand how the VF differs tonally from the BN basses?
