I have 2 Fender jazz basses, one a 1975, and I have a BN5 which I LOVE. Is there a way you can help me understand how the VF differs tonally from the BN basses? | Tom
The VFs sound exactly like a jazz bass with a really good low B.
The sound is not as "big" as a BN, but more focused, like a jazz and when "wearing/playing" the bass, the feel and balance are jazz.

Are you gonna come out with a VF6 anytime soon?
I love the custom BN6 you made for me but have been looking for that vintage jazz bass sound in 6 string format.
What was the main factor that the VF can sound and feel like a jazz bass? |

What was the main factor that the VF can sound and feel like a jazz bass? | Probably on a special order basis.

It took me 30 years to make a five string sound like a vintage jazz!!!
There is no main factor; it is all the facets of construction, balance, feel, wood selection, hardware selection, and fine tuning the pickups to sound vintage but yet have a very good Low B response. There are very tough parameters to achieve. That is why I waited so long to build one. I needed to gather the expertise.
There are very few builders who have "nailed" the vintage 5 string. I believe I have!
A vintage 6 will be another "expedition" in learning.

I love my bn6 so very much. For me, It really does do it all, except genuinely sound and feel like a 5er. When I decide to spoil myself with another bass it will be another beautiful F, and it's very likely going to be a VF5.
Sincere thanks for your great work George,
Pat.

| | | | well
i've thought, and i've thought, i was originally gonna get rid of my fretless F, but i couldn't. it sounds too good, and even though i dont use it too often i know that i shouldn't just dump it, because i'll probably never get another like it again.
i need another fretted 5 for a backup/ a 2nd usable bass to share play time with my f bass studio. i really love the vf5's because of their 'fender-esque' appeal, while still feeling the same in my hands as my other F's/ this way its like playing one big instrument and switiching up basses is like no big deal. |

I developed F Bass GAS when I was over at TBer climb's house doing some trading of other basses when he pulled his out. His has some sort of exotic top and inlays and played beautifully. I started looking for one shortly thereafter and was able to move on this one once I managed to sell something else and get the cash together.
So thanks to Talk Bass, I've managed to learn about F Bass and Skjold basses since I've acquired both during my time here and they'll be in regular gig rotation.

I know you are going to love it. I've owned several high-end basses, and while they were all wonderful in their own right, it seems that F Bass, for me, is a perfect blend of everything I liked in my previous basses.
Enjoy! |
