Sure, what kind of sound do you want? Whatever it is, I can't imagine F Bass not being able to pull it off. George really has done an amazing job of creating a great pickup/preamp combo...

Nice catch Mr. Tom!

I really like the grain pattern on that. Yup, it's amazing.

MODNY: Wow! That is an amazing collection. Covers it for me more than some of these dozen+ collections. Nice.

TOM: That blue is gorgeous. In person it must be fabulous. Can't wait to read your review.

Very nice Tom, a lot like mine, before the color started to fade away, but the sound is there still Good luck with it.

Well Tom, how does it sound and play? One piece northern ash? If for any reason you don't want it, call me. Gorgeous! Oh, how much does it weigh?

"Another new model of F Bass?!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, guys, please help me identify this bass, or I won't be able to sleep tonight.

These photos are 2 of about 40 photos recently posted by TBer VinceLovesF, in a thread called " Visit at the F Bass Factory!"

As you can see by the photos, this bass:
Is a 6 string bass
Is routed for 2 magnetic pickups
Has the line trimming that AC6 basses have
Has frets
Does not have the dot fret markers George usually uses on his fretless basses
Has holes drilled for 7 knobs (piezo? midi? am/fm?)
Is a neck through rather than a bolt on
Does anyone have any idea what model of Fbass this is?"

TOM 7
That is a special order Fretted AC6 model, with the above options you mentioned and with Volume/volume, piezo volume, passive tone and three band EQ

I would describe it as a fat round tone, with very good fundamental and punch, that sits easily in a mix with hardly any EQuing. A variable sound that fits most styles of music without being obtrusive or easily identifyable (hey, that's a Marcus sounding track, probably maple/heavy ash 70's Jazz bass), but supporting the music.
It has been described a Jazz Bass on stearoids and it is a fatter tone, with a wider frequency range than a Jazz Bass. It was never meant to reproduce a Jazz Bass tone, but to be a more variable, slightly more modern sounding bass that would be a good live and recording tool, but still with a lot of the characteristics that made a Fender such a staple in our industry.

Very well said and accurate, IMO. I've always maintained that the BN5s versatility maybe atop it's many attributes. Sounds good through a 900 watt 8x10 rig or a $250 digital recorder.

I'll admit that yours was a bit of an inspiration for my bass, or actually more of a confirmation, as I had already picked this combo of woods/finish before I saw yours. But I definitely dig yours a lot! I even like the way it 'faded.'

Well, to set things straight, it's not a one-piece body. It is a two-piece. Here are some of the rough lumber shots:

As for how it sounds, well, in a word, 'stupendous!' But, to be a bit more verbose, it most definitely has that 'BN5 sound', and if I may quote briefly from my Bass Guitar magazine review (of a killer, buckeye burl topped BN5):

Quote:
This singing tone carries over to its amplified performance, with a quick, clear top end, and a strong fundamental. On first listen, this bass yields what you would expect from a modern, high-end custom instrument – good focus and definition, tight B-string, consistent tone across all 5 strings, etc. What takes a moment to sink in, though, is the vintage vibe that this bass brings. There is a pleasant roundness to each note, and a very full, fat foundation – even on the G-string.

This certainly holds true on the blue bass. Compared to that buckeye topped bass (which I believe had a swamp ash body), the low end on the blue BN5 seems deeper and tighter, and slightly less 'round.' The highs are perhaps just a tad more open, too, which seems to be a common trait on the solid body F Basses I have played (versus the 'topped' basses - though my BN4 seems to be an exception to that rule, as it has a very open and expressive top end).

What I love about F Basses in general, and this blue one, for sure, is that you get basically a 'complete package' right out of the box. The balance from top to bottom is exceptional. The low B is a natural extension of the other 4 strings, and doesn't feel like this extra thing that doesn't blend in with the rest (I have played many basses, and even a number of high end basses, where the B-string is either unnaturally big or unnaturally weak, or just not as 'organic' as the other strings - no such problem with George's basses!). The mids are rich and full, but articulate and clear. The high end is smooth and refined, and I dare anyone to effectively use the adjective 'harsh' to the high end on any F Bass.

I love the control layout, as the 'top row' has just what you'd be comfortable with if you played a J-bass (or even a Thunderbird, as is the case of yours truly) for years - vol, vol, tone. In passive mode, with just those three controls, you can really cover a lot of ground. Going active buffers the output and definitely gives you a more modern, defined clarity (with slightly less roundness and warmth, as compared to passive). Then you have the three bottom controls (boost only bass, mids, and treble), which are very usable (not overpowering, as I find many onboard EQ's to be), and very musical. George's idea of an 'additive EQ' does make it much more likely that efforts to tweak your tone will remain musical, and much less likely that you will turn your tone into something 'unnatural.' I like this preamp a lot.

When people say that an F Bass BN5 can 'do anything', that is no exaggeration, IME/IMHO. This is a very versatile instrument. One defining characteristic is the smoothness of tone, the warmth to each note (across the board), and a tone that is never 'over-hyped.' I can see where someone going for a very aggressive tone (that really deviates to one or the other side of 'center') might not be as thrilled with a BN5 as someone who wants tread a more neutral path, though.

I am certainly very happy with this bass, and it is a very solid performer.

Tom.

Just beautiful! For me, it's the enhanced grain that really adds to its appearance. Congrats Mr. Bowlus!

For the record, that finish does not feature the 'enhanced grain' treatment.

Tom.

Exactly! I absolutely love my F Bass. I have a custom Jazz copy, and a BN5 right now that get all of my playing time, and without a doubt the F Bass is the best bass I've ever owned, and I've owned several great basses.

I know it's your bass but...weird, it sure likes like blackened grain to me.

Okay, I just heard from George. We had talked about the 'enhanced grain' treatment, and ultimately decided against this. But, I had forgotten that we talked about a light brown treatment to the grain, and this is what you see. I like it a lot, as it seems more natural to me than the actual 'enhanced grain' treatment.

Anywho, kudos to George and crew!

Tom.

Oh my GOSH! Dude, that's an incredibly beautiful F! Man I love the blue and maple look (as you know ).
