Thanks. I just wish the photos did a better job of showing off that birdseye board.

Hey Tom, does the finish seem that much more durable than the old finish? What was your opinion of the old finish?

Well, I haven't tried to scratch either one.

The feel is pretty much the same. My BN4 (with the older, nitro finish) has some very, very slight wear marks, and the blue BN5 is of course brand new, so I really can't tell just how different relative durability might be, at this point.

Tom.

Does anyone here actually find the old finish to be incredibly delicate? With all the talk I've read on here about scratches, dings, cracks, etc., I'm really nervous about the finish on F-Basses. Is it really that weak or is there just a lot of exaggeration?

The finish on my two year old F Bass BN5 has dulled where I slap near the body/neck joint. Other basses I've owned look brand new, or close to it in the same area after a similar time frame. But otherwise, the body, the back look great. Just standard player wear in the area's where I touch the body a lot.

Smile New F-Bass BN5

Here is a list of basses I have owned over the years: Spector, MTD, Fender, Ken Smith, Zon, Roscoe, Alembic, Peavey, etc..

I came across a new BN5 at a local store (Bass Specialties) and immediately fell in love with the feel and tone...and ...well I am the owner of my first F-Bass.

I cant believe the comfort, fit, feel, versatility and tone. I wondered where has this bass been all my life? I grew up playing my fathers old Jazz bass and was always comfortable with the neck position, which is very similar on a F-Bass. Some of the basses I own must be designed for people 7 feet tall, when you try to reach the lower registers my wrist was bent and arm approaching strait. They got this bass right (atleast for folks my size). Of course everyone in the F-bass club knows this already im sure.

WoW, you did go for it... I was the guy there on Saturday that showed you the control layout of that bass and I mentioned how much I loved that bass, I own a BN6 and I have owned a couple of BN5's but I have to admit that was THE NICEST F bass that I ever played, Man if ever decide to sell that bass please refer to this post and email me first....

Good luck and enjoy... that bass has got itttt......

BTW, Glen at Bass Specialties is the Coolest cat around, he lets you play all of the instruments thru any amp with absolutly no presure, and a real joy to deal with. Its nice to have a real stand up guy in business by a player for us players.

Hey Gilsonite,

I remember you! I didnt get a chance to thank you while I was in the store. Thanks for taking the time to show me the controls, I really appreciated it. I wanted to make a split decision before Glen closed, I was a little rushed and confused about the controls. My wife said if you dont buy Im, going to...LOL Im glad I did, I am totally digging it, its exactly what Ive been looking for.

Thanks,

Damian

Hey Damian,

Welcome to the club. You have found what I believe to be the best bass builder/designer out there. Every time I play my F I'm amazed at how easy to play it is.

F-Bass Question

Okay F-Bass enthusiasts! I have a question. I'm thinking about getting my dream fretless bass, and my local shop (BTW Gilsonite you are totally right about Glenn & Bass Specialties) has an F-Bass fretless 5 in that gorgeous blue in stock and a Roscoe fretless 5 in stock. Both are beautiful basses, but having not yet testing either one, I'm looking to you all for some insight. Especially since a number of you appear to be both F-Bass and Roscoe owners! Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hey Veronica,

Both The F bass and Roscoe are great basses but
I think you should try out both and stick with the one that really feels and sounds the best to you...

Peace

Gil

You can't go wrong following Gil's advice. As someone who's owned basses from both companies, I will tell you that they are both excellent basses. Personally, I prefer the ergonomic design of the F Bass, and I also prefer George's pickup/preamp combo.

I can't believe I've never subscribed to this thread.

My first BN5 is the photo in my avatar. I've had it for over 4 years now and was/still is my dream bass. I saw my first F Bass on the Bunny Bass site. It was a ceruse finish with a macassar board. So that was the bass I bought and I have not regretted that purchase ever.

Recently I bought a BN6 and it is one of those basses like Tom7 talks about when he was referring to his AC6. I think of playing my BN6 all the time. I'm literally obscessed with it. I will have to get a photo of it posted.

I was fortunate enough have the great pleasure of finally meeting George at the 2007 NAMM show. What a really great guy and nice person. And to top that experience off Alain Caron was there the MAN himself. He has been my favorite bassist and a great inspiration to me for many years. What a treat that was.

Anyway are there going to be numbers issued? And are we going to have a secret handshake?

Okay - so I went back to the shop today to try out the F bass for a second time, with every intention of it coming home with me as the first test soundly placed the F bass above the Roscoe (just a better fit for someone who likes big basses) and my husband said "why don't you try the Ritter too?"

Wait I just got permission to try the Ritter!

For me the Ritter was the way to go for a fretless as it gave me that thumpy upright sound I was looking for. So, very sad to say I won't be joining Club F Bass as much as I would have liked to, the purse isn't that big yet.

Luckily (for me) the Ritter had had very minor shop damage to the headstock which was repaired by the guys at Callowhill (so you really can't tell) and I got it for a deal!

I don't own an F bass but I saw a used one in a local shop. I think it was an older model, circa early 90s. The finish looked ragged! Of course I don't know the history of it, it could have been abused. It looked like it had been through hell. I've seen Fenders older than that one that didn't look so beat up.

They're great basses! I played one at Bass Central a few years ago and was impressed by it.

Here is my BN6. I love this bass and am starting to feel that this would be my desert island bass.
