The standard ash BN5 had more midrange complexity and seemed slightly punchier in the mix than the exotic top BN5.
Granted, alone, each bass was stunning. But if I had to choose which I preferred sonically, the standard ash/maple BN5 was "it!"
Was it a night and day difference? Not really. Was the difference noticeable? Yes.

Many players play with electronic compression anway, so it's not like a topped bass is a flawed bass. It's all a matter of what you want.
The bummer is when you want the sound of an untopped bass, but the look of a topped one! :-)

I skipped the enhanced grain on mine because I like the look of it just natural under the burst.
Enhanced grain rocks too! I could have lived with it.

Edit to add image that shows how the grain follows the "horns" Sweet.

That being said, my BN4 seems to buck this trend, and is probably the best-sounding (to my ears) F Bass I have played (though that blue one is close!): |

That is literally the best clearcoat cobalt blue finish I've ever seen (maybe the best clearcoat/trans finish period). I'm not a huge fan of these basses, but I sure do like the look of that one!!!! |
