So you end up with shiny spots like around the tip side of the pick ups. I'm not much of a slapper but the areas where one popping fingers rub get shiny. I have this problem on two very high end basses. It bothers me but may not bother you.

The sound is shyte and the strings were dead (coz I'm stupid) but for once I have something I'm not too ashamed of. Sur le dos d'un éléphant Chevalresk
This is the bass. I sent a pic to Georges and he put on the website with 1981 as file name so I guess that would be the date.
I think it's the same bass, played by someone who knows how (yes, the nut was replaced): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoSydlvu2-Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWUlsF3ZgYw
I can't play as well but I prefer my "modern" tone over his. |

The satin finish is AWSOME IMO. It will be very well protected from the elements (sealed with an epoxy based sealer, then oiled on top) BUT... it'll literally feel 'buck naked'. Very cool... I love the oil because it still feels like wood. It will get 'shinier' in some places that are subjected to repetitive touching as mentioned... but IMO it just adds to the mojo of the finnish.
BTW... There was a discussion on George's oil finnish this earlier in this thread in think Maybe worth a look.
Good Luck!!
Pat.

As for which bass coloring...
I like how the black of the ebony finger board enhances the black in the grain of the body wood. That is a nice match.
Then again, isn't your current BN5 black enhanced grain? Are you planning on keeping it? Then maybe you want your second bass to be brown to help differentiate it from your first. Besides...
If the ebony has a lot of brown streaks, then maybe tinting the grain brown in the body would pickup and accent the colors in the ebony finger board.
I'm excited for you though, and your new bass.

Also, gloss will make the grain enhancement really pop, where as satin the effect will be muted. |

So, both should be just as durable (I was wrong, mark this date down in the history books), so it's basically an aesthetic decision. |

It shouted "boutique bass" to me before I really knew about boutique basses (not trying to resurrect the 'what is a boutique bass' debate, I'm just sayin'...). I did acquire the taste however and now I have to agree that they are among the most beautiful basses out there. The lines, the contours, PU covers, wood knobs, I love the 2+3 tuners - just looks right to me. The ugliest thing about my bass is me when I'm holding it!
There are certainly other makes out there that are gorgeous too but (IMO) F Basses rank very highly even with the very cream of the crop without any problem at all.
