That means sometime soon a moderator will swoop in here, give us a link to chapter 2, close down these thread, and we'll be chatting in a brand new thread.
Sniff. Sniff. I'm going to miss this old thread!

I can't really ask the question, "Does that left bass have its pickups in the 60s positions" because a 34.5 inch scale bass didn't really exist in the 60s, but either it is an optical illusion, or maybe that BN5 has a very different voice than its cousins. | Tom, I'm just guessing here, but I think the BN5 on the right might be a 34" scale and the one on the left is a standard 34.5 scale, that's probably why the pick-up locations look different at first glance on each bass. If you look at the photo, the bridge location on the left BN5 is mounted a little further back, near the edge of the body. The pick-ups on each bass look to be located at the same position in relation to the 6 control knobs. From what I can see, I think the pick-ups on both BN5s are in the standard 60s location that George uses for all BN5s. Unless of course someone orders a 34" scale, Mitch has a 34" scale BN5 and it plays so easily that it's just stupid, I mean it's just ridiculous. It also makes the bass more 70s j-bass sounding due to the close proximity of the bridge pick-up and the bridge. Hmmm, maybe that's why Mitch is so attached to his 34" scale BN5 being as he is such a 70s j-bass aficionado.
On the other hand, it could just be an optical illusion like you mentioned.
Cheers,
Paul Theriault

No silly Low B stuff though - High C all the way. Really, an E is low enough. And some high notes on a fretless G String can sound a bit weak - maybe those same notes on a C string would sound a bit better...
Who knows... Not me thats for sure. Not until I get some cash! Namm has been fairly interesting from the looks of things. Outbaord preamps galore!! Quote:

I bet you are right.

One of the reasons I like having a C string on a fretless bass is it allows me to play lines closer to the nut. As we all know, the spacing between notes gets smaller as we go up the neck, making it harder to play in tune.
For most songs, the notes below E are optional. Playing in tune, however, is not optional. Having a C string on a 5 string bass makes more sense to me than the B. Besides, the harmonics on the C are much more useful as well than those on the low B.
Also, by deciding to go with an AC5 instead of an AC4, you've opened up the whole used AC5 market as a possibility for getting you an AC bass. That could help with the "get some cash" aspect of your purchase, as you'll have to get less of it.
And if you ever did decide to sell it, the law of supply and demand says you'll do better selling the AC5 because there is more demand out there for it over the AC4. Quote:

I've read good things about the Nordstrand pre in his basses, but then again I'm pretty sure he has been doing his own preamps for less than a year.
George, on the other hand, has been doing preamps for years and has definitely stood the test of time. I'd be quite a bit more confident of an Fbass preamp for sure.

I take the chance to introduce in the club the fact that I have a second F Bass home....
By the way, congrats on your AC5 too ^^
Bought mine used from mikoespanol, very nice man to deal with.
Still have to sell my Dingwall ABI now, don't need 3 basses ^^
Bye

By the way, it's true, I don't need 3 basses. I won't get a VF5, until I try one ^^
But the Dingwall is definely FS here in Europe, let's see when it will leave?
Thanks for the kind comments.
Love these and can't wait to have my flat in Paris in order to have all my gears together ^^
