Anyway, yeah, let's assume it's the same one.
So everybody here knows I like the BN's, but they're not "my" F Bass, so I'm generally kinda' luke warm about them. Fantastic instruments, just not totally my thing. Same thing with buckeye.
So I get this BN in my hands and I'm super impressed... much lighter weight than the other BN's I've touched, the buckeye looking much better in person than I thought it would, gets me rethinking my opinion on them, and I notice this huge fret buzz up high above the octave, and it's just on one string. I'm like, WTH?? I thought George was better at fret work than this!
Me and a few other folks (including Tom) spent like 30 minutes verifying it had nothing to do with setup, when I suddenly notice that one of the strings literally had a defect. It was "kinked" at one point, very visibly, and that was totally the problem. NEVER seen that before. Totally random uber-rare freak thing, but we spent all that time freaking out thinking George actually munged a fret job, and were sweating how to deal with the other GTG'ers and George about it. LOL! |

through a bit more. It's really vocal and growly. It doesn't punch through with it's mids
like a jazz or a Fodera might. It's definitely a bottom feeding kinda bass. I notice that if I
up the mids and pull back on the tone knob that it focuses the tone a bit more though. I
personally like the tone knob up for a more wide sound. This bass will swallow everything
in the room if you want it to. It's sound is just huge and imposing.
If basses were weapons:
Jazz basses would be swords.
Pbasses would be hammers.
Fbasses would be a land mines.

So, I'm thinking of ordering some custom VF5's and I wanted to get my fellow Club members' input.
#1) VF5 in P/J configuration - this would likely feature a Nordstrand P pickup, and "single coil" at the bridge. I'm thinking ash/maple.
#2) VD5 with MM/J configuration - a music man style humbucker in the bridge, "single coil" in the neck. Ash/maple.
What do you guys think? And what colors should I order first? As observed, the single coils would need to be hum canceling... | I think I need to get something published or someone else will beat me to my VF5-MM.

I wish I could find a picture of a 24 fret BN5 or VF5.

Hey, speakin' of which, I was talking to George at NAMM and he's pretty happy with a slightly different version of this bridge, which I'll hopefully get a chance to try at some point. These current vintage bridges are made of brass, but hipshot came out with a new version made of steel that George likes better. We shall see. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
