Unfortunately for you though, the vast majority of us here already have BN5s or BN6s.
But good luck with your sale.

I would like to let you know that I had the pleasure to visit George Furlanetto's F bass factory yesterday!!! its only 1/2 drive hour for me.
Eventhough, I did have a 05 BN6 with maple back a few years, I went to try out a spanking new maple board BN6.
and all I can say is WOW!!!
We spoke a bit about different body and fretboard woods and that bass had the natural finish, and it looked just perfect, it also has the new more durable finish.
I am officialy re-hooked with F basses again, this time around, I did notice a different vibe from the bass, it had more punch, presence, the slap sound......just incredible right on your face kind of sound!. He told me that the new F bass might sound a little different from the one I had (also natural and maple board). there have been some slight changes in the preamp through the years, and he is continously improving his basses.
I am now considering another BN6, and I might join this club soon....
George as always a class act guy, and he even told me he might coming down to Lula lounge (Toronto live music venue)next saturday, to see a tribute show we are doing for the great Celia Cruz (salsa legend) as he just came back from the island himself.
Now I got the F bass disease again.. and I think I know the remedy! Hope to join this club sooner than later.

RB | Hey rbolanos, like many others, I've got the disease too and must I say, I checked with OHIP (Ontario's universal health coverage) to see if the BNF6 I've got on order was covered ... alas. Now, unless I can persuade my doctor that my sanity/well being depends on it, guess I'll break my piggy bank BTW, I'm also planning on getting a BN6 in the near future : I used to have an early 90' studio 6 passive model which, IMO, lacked punch for slap. How was your experience with the one you tried ? What did the wider string spacing (19mm vs 17.5 found on many other 6ers) feel like for finger and slap style ? How did the low B feel/sound like? Anything else you found worth mentioning ?
Cheers !

Cheers !

On the VF, I've enjoyed the DR Marcus Miller, but with the F Bass B string... |

RB | I agree 100%. I just got my new BN-6 from Donovan about a month and a half ago, it is truly an amazing instrument. It plays and sounds just incredible. This is the happiest I have ever been with a bass in 26 years of playing and the best buying experience I have ever had. George and Donovan will be getting my order for my next bass in the spring...

As far as owning basses goes for me, I like to have 2, maybe 3. One 5 string jazz and one fretless. I currently have both covered, but I am really thinking about off-loading my fretless Ric for an AC. Even with my particular Ric being unique and the fact that Ric has put fretless production on hiatus, it wouldn't be able to cover the cost of a NEW AC, and it seems like people around here don't want to get rid of theirs (who can blame you)! They are the best sounding fretless IMO, and I am sure they feel great to play as well.
Hopefully soon enough... |

I'm throwing in with you on the AC....one of the very best instruments I've ever played. They have also been extremely consistant out of the factory which is a factor that is almost as important as anything else when ordering new. |

I won't get into the consistency or Ric's coming out of that factory, but let's just say it isn't the "best". My particular Ric is great and I really have no issues with it, but I have read other accounts that were less than desirable. Either way, it is certainly good to know that such an expensive instrument as the AC is consistent right out of the gate. |

I own two, a fretless AC6 and a fretted AC6... and have been fantasizing about a 3rd...
This one would have an ebony board, redwood top, be chambered and have piezos of course, but would be fretted with just 24 frets, have a neck pickup in the BN6 position, and the top would combine woods so that the body showed a big bass clef sign. Sigh.

Pretty please.
Thanks in advance. | Hey, I didn't forget! The BN5 arrived yesterday, so I put it next to the 535. I tried to guess at the kind of comparisons you wanted to make. Tell me if you think of something else.
The BN5 has 22 frets, and the 535 has 24, so here's a full shot of both.
I'm pretty picky about balance, and I'm happy with both of these basses. The BN5 tends to put the neck just a little more upright; I'm guessing this is because of the slightly larger body and longer upper horn.
The MTD reaches the 13th fret.
The BN5 reaches the 11th fret. (Dog hair courtesy of...um...my dog!)
Here are closeups of the neck heel on each. The MTD has the usual glue joint with a tilt-back headstock, while the BN5 is carved so the entire headstock sits back behind the neck. It looks a bit odd to me, but it works fine: no string rattle in the nut, and the heel doesn't even get close to being in the way of my fretting hand.
And from the front:
Weighed them with the stand-on-bathroom-scale-and subtract-your-body-weight method:
BN5 is 9.4 lbs. 535 is 8.6 lbs. |
