The array of different basses George has built over the years reminds me of the old quote "if you really want to understand something, try and change it". He's certainly gained a lot of knowlege through building such different instruments. My BN5 is the absolute tops. |

I tried a few at GC but couldn't find any that would fit. I don't need anything heavy-duty, just something to keep them in stacked up against the rest of my basses. It's for storage only, I would use the gig bags for transport. Any ideas?
I have the gig bags for all of my F Basses, but I like to keep them in cases when not played. The two cases that I have for my 6 strings are of unknown origin (in that I forgot where I got them) but I need one for my BN5.
Any advice would be appreciated .. |

The strings feel really loose, almost like the bass is tuned down a half step or more. Since I have been playing a BN5 (34.5") and 535 (35"), it could be that I am just used to longer scale basses now. Compared to the VF5 I can really feel the snap in the other two.
But, the alternative is that I could perhaps put some different strings on and tighten things up a bit. I don't know what was on it when it came, but I put a set of Sadowsky blues on a couple weeks later. It didn't change the feel noticeably. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the bass at all - it's mint - and the setup is pretty good after some tweaking.
Any thoughts or suggestions? |

Any thoughts or suggestions? | Are you using the taper-core F-bass strings? I find that these work just fine on my BN5, but I didn't like the way they felt on my VF5. I swapped to DR Fat Beams, and that solved the feel issue, but I'm not sold on the tone of the Fat Beams, so I am thinking of swapping to either Hi Beams or Lo Riders.
But IME/IMHO, it's most likely a string issue, and not a scale length issue.

It might still be interesting to try some LoRiders, but I think after having tried Sadowsky Blues, FatBeams would probably be a waste of time if he's looking for something stiffer. |

I do not know what was on the VF5 when it arrived, but they were not tapered. The F Bass website says that the alder models come with Lo Riders, but I was thinking of Hi Beams. Since DR advertises the Lo Riders as higher stiffness, I guess I will try those next.

| | | | One of those DR strings uses a round core vs a hex core which makes it more flexible. Maybe that's what was on your bass. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
