I was listening to Marcus, and to David Hughes ( short clip of his BN5) and thinking about what I love about the tones of their respective basses, and for some reason I arrived at the conclusion that sonically speaking, ash + rosewood + jazz pickups in the 60s positions must be one great sounding bass. | I hate to tell you guys...but that was not my F Bass BN5 although that's the bass in the photo on the back of the album. On that track I used my '69 Fender Jazz Bass which has an alder body and maple neck.
However, the reason I got an F Bass BN5 with maple neck is that is sounds so much like a Jazz Bass, but with 5 strings and improved ergonomics. I use it as my main gigging and all-round session bass.
All other fretted tracks on that album I played with my '96 F Bass BN6, which has the older split coil pickups (albeit in soapbar covers) and the simple buffer preamp. It has a swamp ash body and maple neck.
Hard to go wrong with an F Bass in any configuration though! |

Wally | Sorry for not responding when I saw it the first time, Wally.
I've often thought about stringing my BN5 E-C, but for a reason others may think is kind of dumb. I worry about wearing the finish on the body of the bass south of the G string due to slapping... since I don't pluck my C string as much (on my BN6), I've thought about stringing my BN5 EADGC so that I don't scrape the body of the bass when I pluck the G string (because of the C string).
The 3 reasons I haven't tried the string change are:
(1) Love the B string on my BN5
(2) EADGC string sets are rarer to come by, although I read that George will package and sell his strings in this configuration upon request.
(3) I have a BN6, so when I want the C string, I just use that bass.

I have one of my Fodera's strung E-C and I actually find that the C string can be a little rough on the knuckles if I'm not slapping alot (and building up a kind of callus there too)... That said, my slap technique incorporates a double pluck position that rests or 'table-tops' the neck pickup... So this may not affect you, but definately something to consider... Quote:

I have both Swoosh and Foreign Shores, and LOVE those discs! In fact, I am a big fan of your playing. I first heard you with David Benoit, and had to know who that bass player was... found your web site then your discs. I hope you've got another one coming out soon.
Also, I love the live clips of you playing on youtube. I think I've recommended dozens of times guys considering BN6s check out Freedom after Midnight. You and Benoit are very tasty compliments for each other.
By the way, which bass did you use on Kathmandu?
BTW #2, would you like to post a photo of an F so we can welcome you to the club as an official, numbered member?

By the way, have YOU had a chance to check out the vintage line of Fbasses?
I bet you'd find an alder & rosewood VF5 like the one George brought Shirley would sound an awful lot like the Fender you used on Snowflakes, only it would play with better ergonomics.

I slap my BN6 and fretted AC6 all the time, so I'm used to the C string being there now. I don't pluck over the neck pickup on the BN6, but yes, I do find it hard on the knuckles and cuticles if I'm not keeping my hands up, so that's a good point. Thanks.

As I've done a few times at least in this forum, I really recommend y'all check out David's website, the sound clips and the CDs. Really good stuff there!
