Cool. Then it's settled. Ash/maple VF5, burst/tort, matching headstock, pearl blocks and white binding. If I get another VF5, that'll be the one. With his up-charge for blocks and binding, it'll be pricey, so it may be a while, but at least I have these uber-cool mock-ups to look at in the mean time, right?

I like the first two because they look like they are wearing a black tuxedo or leotard.

This is really cool to see Mock ups! Awesome job man!
+1 Agreed on all points.

Awesome mockups. You gotta add the matching heel, though.

Played my BN5 with the neck pu solo'd for most of practice last night and man, it was just awesome. Throw on some bass and mids, crank it up, and watch out...so many tones available. F's sound so at home in jazz, rock, funk, etc., etc.
What a beast.

I would have a HARD time deciding on this one. The black looks great because the body is black at the edges and the bridge and tuning pegs keep that theme going.

On the other hand, the chrome bridge and pegs catch the shininess of the blocks on the neck and look great too.

I must add too, that so for I have preferred matching head stocks in EVERY mock up. Of course that is a personal preference thing, but if the head stock doesn't match, then it looks to me like the bass just had any old neck screwed on to it. The matching head stock seems to say, "THIS is a hand made bass with attention to detail."

The only exception for me is when a matching head stock would make it impossible to see the bass maker's logo unless you are very close. In those situations, then I prefer a non matching head stock so that the bass maker can get full credit for his work of art!

I kind of agree: sometimes I like the offsetting colors in the heel, but other times I definitely prefer the matching heel -- and pickup covers and finger ramp.

I rarely play with the neck pickup soloed, I'll have to give that a try sometime.

I don't remember ever liking a plain headstock on an F Bass other than an occassional "Natural Finish F Bass with Maple FB". Even then I prefer a matching wood overlay at the very least. To me, the only basses that really look OK with a natural headstock is a classic Fender style headstock. Call me old fashioned. LOL

+1

I don't know what the heck I was thinking asking about that with a burst finish.

Just minutes ago I discovered that my latest bass purchase, an F Bass VF5, and the amp head I have been considering purchasing, the TC Electronic RH450, are both award winners from Bass Gear Magazine for 2009 NAMM.

I'm really stunned at how countless hours of my independent research has led me to the same product decisions I could have got from 15 minutes on BassGearMag.com.

Wow you guys are good. You don't happen to give investment advice do you?

But seriously folks...

Obviously I haven't talked about the amp considerations here 'cause this is Club Fbass, but I almost did back when Ken was talking about matching cabinets with basses.

So let me as now what I almost asked then: what is everyone was playing their Fbasses through?

We'll have to be careful not to stray too far off topic.

I'm not really wanting to discuss the ins and outs of amplifiers, compressors, preamps, effects, etc. I'm just curious how we all shape our Fbass tones is all.

Ok here's a few more ideas I came up with. Let me know what you think.

Sorry Tom7. I didn't mean to override your question. Now back to the subject. I
currently am using a SVT4 pro head through a DBX 166XL compressor and a Ampeg
BXT 4x10 and 1x15. I'm getting rid of my rig though. I'm looking at Aguilar, EBS, and
Eden stuff.

Right now, Thunderfunk 550A + 2, 1x15 Eastern Acoustic cabs.

Works well for the gigs I play.

Hope to upgrade to a pair of Dr. Bass cabs someday.

Welcome JensWest. Hope you love your F Bass as much as I love mine. Yours looks very sweet.

Ummm... buy bass guitars when the economy is good and then hang onto them?
