Welcome aboard, Paul. We're looking forward to more posts by you -- and to seeing the rest of that performance on youtube as well!

George, can you set me straight? Did you update the the satin and the gloss finish, or just the gloss? When did this happen effectively? I'm just curious for future reference. Thanks!

p.s. George- All the years of waiting and lusting after an AC finally paid off. What an exquisite fretless. Wow | Until George chimes in, I'll give you a link to when George announced in Talkbass on March 17, 2008 that the new finish is now standard on all Fbasses.
At the time, TomBowlus, editor in chief of Bass Gear Magazine, wasn't sure if his new, Blue BN5 had the new finish, so it seems as if the new finish came out right around that time, in early 2008. George described the new finish in a post dated 13 April 2008. Quote:

Knock on wood. Or in my case, Nitro.
But that's not to say others haven't had problems with their finishes, I know they have and have seen pictures. I just believe I have been both fortunate, and have enjoyed the fruits of very careful treatment of my basses.

that way. It gives it character. It makes the player look like he has been using it. It
bothers me to see these "worn" instruments coming out. It's like buying integrity.
That's just me though. I'd rather have an Audi that I can get fixed if it gets a scratch rather
than have a Lamborghini that you can't enjoy because you will be so worried you will
scratch it. That's why the BN6 I ordered is as raw as it can come.
Either way my next Fbass will most likely have a high gloss finish on it.

Either way my next Fbass will most likely have a high gloss finish on it. | I totally get that. I'm more than a bit shocked at the "Reliced basses." They reminds me of a business training class I had in the 80s... the speaker said, "The key to influence is sincerity. If you can learn to fake that, you'll have it made!" (And yes, he knew he was making a joke).
When my red BN6 chipped, I told myself I would only buy wood finished basses from here on out so that if they get a flaw, all you really see is wood, not missing paint.
However, I broke that rule recently though, when I got my burst VF5 though, but I did it knowing it had the newer, harder finish. Besides, when I think of other burst basses and how they "reliced" over time, I think I'll still be very happy with my burst VF5.

it age rather than buy an artificially aged one. I can understand trying to get repairs
though. There's a difference between worn and thrashed. It can be a little overkill if you
have big gouges or chips taken out of it. Then I can understand doing a little repairing to
keep in all together. |

Facing the camera is Hadrien Feraud, a young French bassist known for his astonishing dexterity and speed. I have Hadrien's debut album. Hadrien is quite young, yet has the likes of Chic Corea and John McLaughlin in his playing credits.
And if I'm not mistaken, the person with his back to us is none other than Alain Caron. In fact, Hadrien seems to be playing Alain's bass in this photo.
The thing that gets me about this photo are the guys chatting in the background. What on EARTH?!!! This is NAMM, and Alain and Hadrien are world class musicians: two of the very best to ever play their instrument.
If I were in that room, I'd be right there by Alain, giving 100% of my attention to the playing, and trying to learn anything and everything I could.
Just blows my mind!
On the other hand, just look at Alain's body language. Doesn't he look totally into what he is hearing? Here is one of the world's very best, with decades of accolades and he appears to be totally humble and appreciating fully what another player has to offer.
This photo should be hanging in the Louvre!

Hadrien's is "this guy is creeping me out".
BTW the guys talking in the background are part of the Mark Bass company so I'm sure
they are completely use to seeing HF and AC playing. And if they were at NAMM I'm
sure they are just about sick of hearing them play. JK |
