Regards.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2000 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | | Okay, this evening I decided to experiment with string types again, so I did quick recordings of my basses so I have something solid to compare to.
And since I was making quick and dirty recordings of some basses anyway this evening anyway, I decided to string the recordings together (no pun intended) and let you guys take a listen too.
In fact, I'll let you guys guess which bass is which.
To make it as easy as possible, I chose a famous Marcus Miller slap lick so that y'all have a reference point -- I can't remember what the name of the song this riff comes from, but like I said, it will allow you to have in your ear what an ash & maple bass with the pickups in the 70s position sounds like so that should help you place each bass.
Also, there are 3 tracks for each bass: a rhythm, a slap track, and a finger style thing over the top of the slap. BTW, I basically did whatever came to me for the finger style track, so it varies with each bass. To help separate the two lines, I tilted the two tracks toward different speakers.
It's not a great recording, both in terms of sloppiness of playing and having it peak at points and get fuzzy, my apologies, but I wasn't about to redo anything; this is just for me to compare strings and what I did is good enough to allow me to do that.
So, here is the mp3.
And here are the basses on it (in no particular order): Fodera Yin Yang - Alder body, maple fingerboard, Mike Pope preamp on with a touch of bass boost, VTC full on. Currently has old Ken Smith slap master strings on it. Alleva Coppolo Custom - Alder body, rosewood fingerboard, preamp on with lows and highs boosted, VTC full on, both pickups full on. Although the bass is alder & rosewood, the pickups are in the 70s positions. Currently has an old set of coated roundwounds on her, I don't know what make. Fbass BN6 - Ash body, Macassar ebony fingerboard, preamp on with lows and highs boosted about 30 percent, and mids boosted about 10 percent, VTC full on, both pickups full on. Currently has a VERY old set of Fbass exposed core strings on her. Fbass BN5 - Ash body, maple fingerboard, preamp on with lows and highs boosted about 20 percent, VTC full on, both pickups full on. I have read that, although the BN5 is ash and maple, and a 34.5 inch scale, the pickups are relatively at the 60s position. Currently has an old set of Ken Smith slap masters on it. Fbass VF5 - Alder body, rosewood fingerboard, preamp on with lows and highs boosted about 10 percent, VTC full on, both pickups full on. While this bass is alder and rosewood, and the pickups are in the 60s position, it has a BAV bridge. Currently has Fbass exposed core strings that are due for a change as well.
I'll give this a couple of days before I give up the answer so that everyone has a chance to make a guess that is interested in doing so.
Cheers!

1.) BN6
2.) VF5
3.) A-C
4.) BN5
5.) Fodera
2 and 3 were hard to pick out but 3 sounded drier so I'm thinking that's the A-C.
1 and 4 had a wider and more rounded, wet attack and tone so I'm thinking they are BNs.
5 had a very focused mid range with a twangy treble so it sounds like Vic to me.

up. Those aren't part of his new line of basses. Good eye though.

It's been hectic on our end but I finally got a chance to seriously work on the website. I just revamped the model page as it was terribly out of date...here's the link: http://www.fbass.com/html/models.html
Any feedback and constructive criticism is MUCH appreciated!
Thanks
P.S You may find a couple of thndrstk6's mock ups at the bottom of the AC & BN model pages. |
