Better sell me this bass; I'll just have to suffer with the unfixable flaw of steel screws.

I'm sure you've posted photos before, but because I like every new page to have a photo, and I'd like to save myself the trouble of looking back for when you posted a photo, would you mind posting them again?
Again, my apologies for not giving you one yet. I just always thought you had one already.

He did a youtube on it when he grabbed it that you should check out. I'd have bought it the moment he posted the you tube, but he said it wasn't for sale. I asked him about it a couple of times, but alas, still not for sale. The next thing I know it was on ebay! I'd have grabbed it, but I just got a Fodera and the AC6-Classic and had no way in the world to sway my wife that I "needed" 3 new basses at once.
This clip really is one of my favorite Donovan clips; what a great look at sound.

I haven't seen another BN with a roasted board since then. Anyone else ? | No, I haven't seen another Fbass with a roasted board either, although I did consider an ash and (roasted) maple VF5 and had it mocked up:

I haven't seen another BN with a roasted board since then. Anyone else ? | 2009 is correct! It was at the Markbass booth for the whole show - I saw it and bought it right before the show closed!
I've never seen the fretboard either - it's beautiful! |

I guess I'll do some more felt and foam experimentation. | Hey Firebass,
Have you considered installing a 'BassMute?' |

I am indeed considering a bass mute. I need to contact the maker to get the exact dimensions (they aren't on the site), then I can see if they actually fit my F basses
Is that your Fodera & mute?
If so, do you have any comments on how easy you find the mute to use? Quote:

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: Melbourne, Australia. | | | I just installed it last weekend, and am yet to 'gig test' it...
However once it's on, it's a piece of cake to use... Just flick the switch forward into position 1 or 2 and it's good to go. I imagine I'll tweak the degree of muting per string as I go, but I'm pretty happy with the results thus far...
I'm glad I have another bass without the mute, but this would have to be the perfect compromise between a good, consistent muted tone and the ability to quickly change. You probably can't flick the switch off and play a phrase 'non-muted' as fast as you can lift your palm and play a phrase fingerstyle, but the consistency oh the mute, and ability to play with different right hand positions far outweights this in my limited experience... |

| | | Well, if you are sure to use it I would just go and put it on, but I can see why you would have some difficulties screwing something right in a flawless piece of art. I had the same with the ramp on my bass, and that's even just taped on there.
But if it's something you would use, go for it. My uncle screwed a Roland midi pickup on his '68 Jazz Lefty (!), because he liked it. Why not right?
It does work great, it's made by Ellio Martina who is one of the best luthiers here in Holland. Check out his work, flawless basses, he is a real master. |

And there are plenty of adhesives out there that will not mar an instrument's surface, so sticking a ramp on is a non-issue to me. Screw holes are another matter.

If so, do you have any comments on how easy you find the mute to use? | They've built them with enough adjustability that it should work on most basses. With 18mm spacing on my CB 6er, there's still enough room if I had ordered it with wider string spacing.
The Bass Mute is cake to use. All you need to do is adjust the pads once and flick it on and off when you want to use it.
They have a version that can mount via adhesive, but I went with bolting it on to avoid it falling off at the wrong moment. Since I like the Bass Mute and use it, I could live with the screw holes. |

That would be my concern as well... basically anything that would be solid/permanent enough that you wouldn't be distracted by that concern, would probably mar the surface anyway, and you might as well just screw one on. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
