Get them as close as possible with an acceptable amount of weird
overtones for your taste. Slowly raise each screw about a 1/4 turn and play/listen to them at each increment.

Good news!! I just found out today that things will work out for me to place an order for an F-bass this August. I hope that one of the Alain Caron BN6's is still available!!

[Laughing!] I know just what George is talking about.

The overtones of the strings being too close to the pickups are heard more above the 13th fret, so don't just measure by open strings or fretting down around 5 and 7.

Thanks George, I thought there was a numerical spec for this, maybe I'm thinking of string height. In my experiments with PU height, I am amazed how much influence this has the basses tone and output.

Yes...the closer they are to the strings the better they sound...in my opinion, but it's a personal preference. The farther way they are the thinner the sound....BUT....clearer, AND more "acoustic" sounding.

George,

I have 1/8" distance with the string depressed but I'd like to get them closer on the treble side, can some extra foam or rubber be stuck in the pickup cavities to give them more "push-up"?

Yes you can add thick foam. I recommend thick weatherstripping, or taller surgical tubing.

Speaking of pickups, I have a dumb question, but one I have often wondered about.

BN pickups... they are described as "soap bar," but they sound like single coil and have a hum cancelling mode about them. Can anyone give me a layman's explanation?

i think theyre stacked humbuckers with the default setting now being single coil mode. soap bar could be anything as its just a case shape.

Laughing! No wonder my wife accuses me of loving Fbasses more than her!
