The overtones of the strings being too close to the pickups are heard more above the 13th fret, so don't just measure by open strings or fretting down around 5 and 7.

In my experiments with PU height, I am amazed how much influence this has the basses tone and output. |

The farther way they are the thinner the sound....BUT....clearer, AND more "acoustic" sounding.

| | | | George,
I have 1/8" distance with the string depressed but I'd like to get them closer on the treble side, can some extra foam or rubber be stuck in the pickup cavities to give them more "push-up"? |

BN pickups... they are described as "soap bar," but they sound like single coil and have a hum cancelling mode about them. Can anyone give me a layman's explanation?
