I agree neck thickness affects tone, but I am very surprised to read there is an improvement on the tone of the VF5. I just finished gigging it -- as well as 4 other basses -- and I know which bass the band liked the tone of most, and it is hard to imagine that tone being improved on.

Up here in Canada you are going to pay around $2 grand for a new EBMM. In my personal opinion, I would much prefer having George build a custom EB flavored VF than buy a factory line Ernie Ball! Quote:

Yet another reason why I let the system give the numbers instead of doing it manually... I've had to change pretty much everyone's numbers in the 100's to correct that mistake so here is a repost of the roster.

Like a bulldozer. I doubt I will do any videos anytime soon, but sound clips is a possibility. Don't hold your breath, but they may just show up one day.
Per the comment about buying an EBMM, I have owned a 5-string Bongo (HHP) and played multiple Stingrays and Sterlings. I am not going to bash any of these instruments because they represent great craftmanship at their price points and in the volume they sell. However, the balance, comfort, ergonomics, fit and finish, and electronics of an F Bass are in an entirely different league, as they should be at a "custom" volume and price point. All things considered, since the volume of this bass is one (so far), I think the price was quite reasonable.
FWIW, I sold the Bongo because I couldn't get over it being neck heavy, and I felt that the electronics were not transparent... no natural sound of the instrument seemed to come through. The F Bass MM/J could not be more opposite. You can feel the sound of the bass in your chest and hear what you are feeling through the electronics. I play it either direct or through a Markbass head (with everything flat), so the sound makes it right through the chain untarnished.

I agree neck thickness affects tone, but I am very surprised to read there is an improvement on the tone of the VF5. I just finished gigging it -- as well as 4 other basses -- and I know which bass the band liked the tone of most, and it is hard to imagine that tone being improved on. | man, the tone is pretty killing on my 70's vf5. i couldnt imagine it getting much better. the profile depth is just about right. the only niggle i have is that its slightly asymmetric with its slightly thicker bass side. im not a big fan of that, but its purely personal preference. the 60's vf5 i used to own was symmetric which i liked better. must have been variance in hand shaping the necks. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
