I still have to install the innards and drill out the pickguard. The TRC is actually a piece of Spanish Cedar - from a cigar box, and it is shaped to fit around the tuners.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Like this thread, lots of beautiful basses ... kudos to you all.
I was wondering if anyone here can help me confirm the identity (maker) of this bass, from/based on the routings on the body. Maybe any of you opened up your basses and have a similar one.
I know its a long shot, but just in case anyone can help, it'd be nice. I rescued this bass as a bare bass. Its a single truss rod, rosewood fingerboard (coated), triangle inlays, stereo-mono outs, neck binding, and there is a gap on the body binding at the tailpiece.
Apprecitae it, hope someone can chime in.
Thanks ! |

I need a hand identifying this Rickenbacker copy that I may be getting in the near future as a part of a trade. The guy's not so handy with emailing photos, so one is all I could get out of him:
So, as you can see, we have checkered binding, toaster pickup, black switch cover, oval (i.e. not rectangular) tailpiece holes, and partial-width & shiny fretboard inlays.
The owner said the original pickguard was white, and the TRC was blank (white) when he got it. He can't remember if it had one or two truss rods. It is a neck-through. He originally said it was a Univox, but then backed off of that idea, thinking it was maybe an Aria. I don't think he is certain at all, but I don't remember seeing either brand with checkerboard binding.
So is it an Ibanez? Kasuga? Greco? Help me out, guys and gals!

I hate you guys.
Every real Rick I've played over the last 20 years or so left me cold due to flaws (and terrible set-up/string choices) and their business model is too un-American. Then there's the price--no effing way will I ever pay that much for what I could have got for $300 in the '80s.
Definitely keeping my eyes open for the various copies but also hoping that the Chinese exporting agent my company uses can find me a decent new copy at wholesale prices.
The main thing for me is THAT sound, which boils down to pickup placement along the scale length first and foremost--will build my own if I have to.

| | | | Just picked up a circa 1974-5 Univox Japanese Rickenfaker, and it's a beauty. Very well-made. It's in Mapleglo with a single truss rod, the pickups are Bartolini replacements and the bridge is a Hipshot replacement. In some ways, I almost like it better than my real Rics. The Barts give it a little bit warmer tone, I'd say, but it's still fairly Ric-ish. |

This Rickenbacker lookalike bass that looks awesome to me, because I love Rickenbackers, but they are too expensive to me, and you say, that you bought it for 40 bucks ?

| | | | Loving this thread! Looked for months online at these things and just could never get the courage to get one (afraid of customs getting it before I did). I've played countless Ric's, and I've almost saved up enough to get one, but.......
how do these things feel compared to the real deal?
I hear the sound can be pretty spot on, depending on who put it together, but do these things play like a Ric at all? |
03-25-2013, 06:00 PM
| | | | The Japanese ones from the '70s are said to be almost identical to a Ric and, if my Univox is any indication, they are. Several brands were made at the Matsumoto (sp?) plant, I believe.
