Comparing flats: TI vs Labella 750N on a Godin A4 fretless
I've noted a while back that all Rob Allen's basses are shipped with La Bella 760N black nylon tapewound flats. I've always been a fan of Thomastik Infeld (TI) flats and I prefer lighter gauge strings so I hadn't tried the heavier gauge La Bellas. Well La Bella have released a lighter gauge version (750N) and so I thought it was time to give them a whirl!
There are 2 mp3s below. See what you think and prefer.
The recording source was made as follows:
Godin A4 with retro-fit K&K sound pure pickup -> Summit Audio preamp -> Edirol USB interface -> Mac Book Pro Logic (touch of reverb)
The levels were identical for both recordings. The TIs are old the La Bellas new!
the 2nd one
LaBellas for sure.
FWIW, I recently went through the same comparison. Initially I preferred the LaBellas on the Godin, but after a few days I went back to the TI's. To me the TI's felt better and sounded more "organic" on the Godin, but the LaBellas were my favorite in the RA.
What Rob Allen have you got?
You could have informed me! I would have appreciated the knowledge!
I preferred the sound of the first link, but both sounded great!
TI are my fav, but also La bella Black Nylon coated flat sound great too.
It would be interesting to hear how the La Bella's age in. I have the impression you're getting a little more meat on the low end with them, and if that held up and they also smoothed out a lot in the higher range, it would all be good.
I preferred the sound of the TIs but they both sound great
