Could it be? Another johnk_10 Restoration Thread! 1966 Fender Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I figured I'd do my part and show off the amazing work that John has done for me recently.

Backstory: I always wanted a 1966 Fender Jazz bass like Paul Turner from Jamiroquai uses (Olympic white, matching headstock, tortoise pickguard, binding with dots, and lollipop tuners) but they're crazy expensive. I found a beat up one on ebay for a decent price (which turned out to belong to TB member jk0580) put in a best offer and won it!

It was pretty beat up but nothing terrible. It was stripped, missing a pickguard, ashtrays, knobs, thumbrest, some of the original wiring wasn't there, it had a few extra holes drilled, along with a bunch of dings and dents, fret sprout, and some damaged binding.

Here ares some pics:

The good thing was most of the real important things were there and original: body, neck, pots, tuners, bridge, pickups...

Within a few days I contacted John and shipped the bass off to him. He did some beautiful work!

Binding Repaired:

(he tinted the binding to match afterwords)

Fixing up the neck. See the pic above for how off the contours were and all those dings on the underside:

Body Stripped:

and sealed:

Painted:

And complete!!!!

This restoration went pretty smoothly (according to John) with the exception of having to have the pickups rewound, which was a bit of a surprise but not a huge deal. They were rewound by Seymour Duncan and John says they sound great!

John was a pleasure to deal with and really gives these old instruments the respect they deserve.

The bass is officially on it's way to me so I'll be sure to post more pics and provide more feedback when I get it.

Thanks for checking out my thread and a big thanks again goes out to johnK!!

Hey John, it appears you're on a roll. For a different approach to a less-modified jazz bass, see the work John recently did for me at:

'63 Jazz restoration (pics!)

I too much appreciate the respect for the instruments' history and "feel" that John brings to the assessment of how to restore it to former beauty. ...and there are only a few who can bring that vision to life in the final product. You're looking at it.

That's a beautiful bass, man! (I should admit here that if the sunburst restoration hadn't worked out on my '63, an Oly white refin was in the cards for me as well ).

Great choice, great craftsmanship, great result!

What was the deal with the headstock in the first pic? Looks like a blob of paint.

thanks guys. and thanks Henry for being patient with me (although your's was done pretty quickly, for me anyway ).

the most difficult was getting the neck back into it's correct shape. whoever refinned it really banged it up with deep gashes all over the headstock. they also didn't use a block to sand the body and the neck so they both were not flat at all. then i had to deal with the stain imbedded in the neck's wood. the wood strip that was used to replace the missing binding was a whole other issue. as were the last 6 frets that were lifting up from the fingerboard, but when everything was dealt with, it came out looking like none of it's aquired problems and rough handling had ever happened. before i began work on it, i could already tell that it was truly a beauty of a bass under all of that, and all i had to do was bring it back to the way that it once was. BTW, this one was originally an olympic white bass, so this is what i'd call a 'numbers matched' restoration. IMO, this bass is most likely now better than it ever was.

on top of that, it's a featherweight for a jazz bass, and it's neck is laser straight with super low action. the intonation also strobed perfect form the nut to the last fret. Seymour really did a super nice job on rewinding the pickups with the correct gauge wire and number of turns too, so you could say that everything on this bass went extremely smoothly. when it was time to put it all back together, everything just fell into place and it played great with very little adjustment.
