The postman was here this morning, bringing me an incredibly nice 66 Jazz...!
I am starting to think that I have become GAS-free
For the last couple of years, I have been struck by severe vintage GAS, which has resultet in a 66 alder/rosewood Jazz, a 72 ash/maple Jazz, a 64 alder/rosewood P (with flats), a 79 ash/rosewood P (with A-neck and rounds), a 78 Stingray and a 79 Sabre. Each play, feel and sound unique, and I wouldn't wanna be without any one of them!
I found out that old Fenders sold for more in my country than I could get them on ebay, so I bought a 72 Jazz in 2008 with the intention to sell it to make a quick buck or to store it for a couple of years and make a slightly bigger buck... Not very noble, I know...
Anyway, it arrived with rusty strings and looked very miserable compared to the expensive, shiny boutique basses I preferred back then, so I figured I should at least put on some fresh strings and set it up just a little to make attractive to anyone.
So, I did, and then I put it in my amp to check if the electronics were functional, and guess what... It sold right away! To me!!! It just sounded so F€#"€€&/% great, and I knew that I could never sell it.
Then, I figured 'Wow, if an old J is so great, maybe I should give an old P a try...' I had never been into P basses, but boy was that going to change...!
Well, long story short, I love all my vintage basses as they all have a unique voice that fits certain styles of music and bands I play with in a certain way, and yes, I do play them very regularly - they are not just hanging on the wall
I would have never thought that I'd sell of my boutique basses and buy vintage instead, but there you go...! (anyone interested in an almost new Alleva Coppolo LM5 Deluxe? )
Oh, and am I really GAS-free, then? Hm... I guess I'd still like to check out one of them late 60's Telecasters out...
And finally, here a 'Vintage Family' photo:
And a few cousin pics :-) |

Boutique basses have become of no interest to me. The way I see it, there have been so many great bass tones that have been recorded... what makes you think some company is going to suddenly invent one that is better?
And think about it -- do you ever hear people talking about that "classic Sadowsky sound?" Has an engineer or producer ever asked if you had a Lakeland? When you go on an audition, do you really think anyone is impressed if you're using a Fodera?
I have a bunch of basses and that, in part, removed my GAS. But mostly because once you have a few different sounding instruments, you're pretty much covered. Then it's just about PLAYING. |

Oh, and I was actually asked once by a producer if I had a Lakland...
Today, the most modern basses I have are my 5'ers. A fretless Lakland 55-02, an SR5 (which is kinda vintage as it's one of the early Alnico models :-), and a Sandberg PM5. And they all sound great as well. |

congratulations. | Thanks! And yes, that is a pretty amazing looing bass - I love the dotted fretboard with bindings!
Oh, and it plays and sounds great, too. However, I haven't brought it to any gigs or rehearsals yet, so the final verdict is yet to come

It is possible, kind of a weird feeling: little interest in ebay/craigslist/kijiji etc., spend more time playing than looking, spend money on other things instead.
I'm there too.
Of course there are still things I'd like to have or check out, but no really burning need for more gear.
Old habits are hard to break, though...

Some how I've managed to play/practice/write constantly and be a major GAS fiend!
(not to mention spend time with friends, my wife, and get everything else in my life done.)
NO WAY!
