A couple questions on swapping out stock SX (essex) necks!

Sign in to disble this ad
1. I have had an SX P/J for a couple years now. Great bass! I recently came into posession of one of those 90's "Fender, Squier series" P basses that has been completely gutted. So, being a slow week last week i decided to see if i could swap necks. Don't get me wrong, i LIKE the SX neck (old headstock), just wanted to see if it fit!

Well, it SORT of fits. The screws line up great, and the sides of the pocket are snug-as-a-bug. However, there is a ~2mm gap at the base of the pocket. Will this gap be a huge hinderance? does the neck need to be SUPER snug? Can/should i put some sort of filler in there to make more contact?

2. Well, GAS pains struck again when i saw that this was released yesterday: http://www.rondomusic.com/ursa4jrrncar.html mmm... CAR Jag bass shorty...

Anywho, does anyone know if a Squier Bronco neck will fit in the SX JAG Shorty pocket? How are these Jag short scales, in general?

Thanks!!!

You can slip a piece of a business card inside to make sure it's snug.

I asked this same question a few months ago when I got my SX Ursa 1, The sides of the pocket were as nice and as tight as you could possibly want, but at the very end of the neck pocket the rout got a little sloppy and there was a gap similar to what you describe. The consensus seemed to be, as long as fit on the sides were good, a small gap at the very end wouldn't hurt anything. After about 5 months the neck appears to be nice and stable and straight, everything lined up as it should be, it doesn't appear to affect the sound or sustain in any noticeable way, so I'm going to assume that that assessment is right, a little gap at the very end won't affect anything.

Awesome!!!

That's exactly what i'm experiencing, and that's exactly what i wanted to hear!

It's barely even noticable unless you have your face right there in it. I've strung it up, tuned/inotated it... and everything sounds copasetic... i just wanted to make sure there won't be anything 'bad' happening if i play it lik ethis for a while. On the other hand, i'm really amazed at how well the sides of the pocket fit!!
