Question ??? Craig's List ???

Sign in to disble this ad
Isn't this bass supposed to have the screw holes for a mute under the bridge cover?

Is something wrong or is this a fake or what?

It's supposed to be a '77 J and I smell a rat I think.

Have a who-sa wha under the where?

Looks good to me. Walnut finish, block neck. Pretty sexy beast. $2799 is a joke though - I can buy at least two for the price of that anywhere else.

And the knobs aren't original.

I thought that all basses with the bridge cover on them (the screw holes and looking at the original CL post) shows a bridge and p'up cover - so I just thought the mute attachment screw holes should be there too.

My bad.

No...I think your referring to a piece of foam that some players would "tuck" into the bridge cover to give a warm heavy bottom sound. The holes are merely there for the neck and bridge pickup covers.

In 1956-7 Leo patented a mute for his guitars and basses :::

Patent number: 3427916
Filing date: Jun 2, 1956
Issue date: Feb 1969

http://www.google.com/patents?id=-kt...20mute&f=false

I thought this is what was under the cover originally.

I also saw that Bassgod had a relic'd BOD that had the holes when I was reading that whole post today::

...and comment was made that the relic was so accurate that it even had the mute mounting holes in the body.

And from Post # 6 :::

Dan comes through with some awesome relicing. He is never fond of Fender's relic style, equating it to belt sanding. He uses this subtle approach which looks finely aged. He even remembered to add the drill holes not only from the pick guard but the string mutes, as well. You go Dan!

nope. I had a 77 - no mutes (there was a cheap hunk of foam glued to the underside of the ashtray cover.

no matter - $2700 for a CBS Fender? Not in my lifetime.

Yeah - not questioning the absurd price - just that the holes aren't there.

My '78 P-bass had no mute mounting holes like that, just holes for mounting the bridge and pup covers. It still had the original bridge cover when I bought it, and you could stiil see where the foam rubber mute had been glued on the underside of the cover. This is the first I ever heard of Fender having a mechanical mute thingy.

I've known about it for a while - but I figured that this CL should have some marks at least. I guess it's an early 1960s thing though.

I also believe that the mechanical mutes were on the Fender Plus bass - better known as the Boner.

Oops! Found another pix of those holes:::

The mutes were only there from '60 to '62. By '63 it was just a bit of foam glued under the bridge cover.

Thanks - I wasn't aware of the cut-off date for taking that extra piece outta there.

I am now enlightened.
