Craigs List Fender bass.

Anyone know what this bass is? Or know if it would be worth picking up for 500-600? The add reads..........

I am selling a very nice professional vintage Fender Bass Guitar. My husband played it for years, professionally. I found out this guitar has been refinished and new pickups were installed, However, it is still a Fender and it sounds wonderful. It dates, 1970. Price was dropped due to that fact. If there is someone out there needing a good guitar to play, this is it. I realize dealers and traders will not be interested. thank you

I am interested lady...just need to know what you TB'er old fender experts know about this. Thanks

Looks like a Mustang bass with the finish removed and a pickup change.

I like it.

It's a Musicmaster Bass, a cheaper Mustang Bass, basically.

I got mine on Craigslist for $300. You can probably get one on ebay for $400-450.

That bass looks like it's in need of finish. The massive pickup is intriguing, though. But I say overpriced.

The bass is wonderful. It's a short-scale, and it has the following four short-comings:

1. Pickup. But it looks like that split humbucker should be adequate.
2. Two-saddle bridge. It can be intonated properly, but it needs a little work.
3. Wiring. There's a cap that's always engaged, but this is easily fixed with a pair of wire cutters.
4. Ever so slightly neck heavy. But really, I'm just nitpicking.

Here's mine:

Not sure, some time in the 70s. They were only made from 1971 to 1981 by Fender. I could check the serial number but I'm lazy.

It'd be worth more if it had original the PU. I'd bet that humbucker sounds like poo-poo in a band setting...and the finish is TOAST on that sucker...

I wouldn't drop 5-600 for it...maybe offer 300-400...

Oh okay. Thanks for the info. I thought maybe it was a good find. See that's why I check with the fender heads on TB.

Nice catch!

The price definitely seems steep.

I just did not know anything about it. If it had been a 70's J or P bass I would know what I was looking at, but not this thing. It looks awful, I was just checking on its value. Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure that anything is better than the stock pickup. The original is basically a Mustang guitar pickup with six pole pieces.

I saw that too. I don't have the money but I'd love to hear what the Fender experts have to say about it.

EDIT: I sat here w/out hitting post for too long lol. I swear I didn't just post w/out reading.

Pickup looks like the ones used in the 1970s Telecaster bass (which was either designed by Gibson for Fender, sourced by Fender from Gibson, or ripped off from Gibson by Fender).

I think if you have $500-600 to spend on a bass, you can easily find a used Mustang Bass for that.

A Musicmaster should be in the $300-400 range. I don't really find them to be much better than a Squier Bronco Bass, which is $150 new.

I got my 78 musicmaster bass for $300 and have seen a few others go for around that or a little bit more in original, good condition. That definitely isn't worth that much money.

Overpriced. That Gibson pup looks like one from the short scale Gibson. It MIGHT be a dub monster w/flats. Needless to say the finish is way beyond "relic-ed".
