When I'm shopping and paying top dollar for "vintage" anything, personally, its gotta be all stock. He says he's "discounting" it due to extra body routing, but its still $2500. I'd pass.

i saw that ad a couple days ago. btw, i'm waiting to hear from an aquaintance about another routed 69 Fender Jazz and he only wants $900. which leads me to believe it was a botched effort.

I'm guessing the PG probably isn't "original" either.

Non original guard, bridge, tuners, and a big hole in the body.
So does that bring it down to 2500? Up to you, considering I wouldn't let my '69 Jazz go for anything under 4k

Is $4k a typical figure these go for (presuming it's in "fair-good original" condition)? How can you tell/ do you know the pickguard, bridge & tuners are non- original?

the bridge is a high mass bridge (possibly a badass) and the tuners on almost all '69's were either nickel plated clover leafs or chrome plate lollipops, of which that bass has neither.
the pickguard is a B/W/B one and stock it would've been tort.

honestly I think it looks ok... but I still think $2500 is a little high. I'd say $2000 is FAIR for it, $1700 being a good buy, and $1500 being a deal... but that's just me.

Are there any ways to quickly verify if the pickups, pot, etc are original?

The body doesn't really look like it has much player wear, either. Is that because it's a poly finish (which it would have been, in '69, I think), or because it's just not that great to play?

Unfortunately, you can't verify them without taking apart the bass. Some sellers are cool with that, some aren't.
I'd ask the guy to show proof, unless he's cool with you bringing a screwdriver set along.
