Craig'slist: 72 Reissue Jazz?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

My friend was looking at basses on craig'slist. He found this ad: '72 Reissue Fender Jazz Bass

He says it looks funny to him, something about it seems fake. I know NOTHING about the history of Fender basses (keep it to yourself, now) and so I really cannot help him out. But, I am a member of this community and I know there are tons of people here than can help me and him out. What say you?

A two knob Jazz in a non-standard Fender Color to start...says 'not real'.

Also, a somewhat legit 72 RI would not have that bridge, pickguard, or pickups...he does say 'custom built' which to me says "I'm a parts bass with a Fender Decal".

Well, skunk-stripe on the back of the neck and a four-screw plate should tell you something...

The blocks and binding make me think the neck is an AllParts or GuitarZone aftermarket. The dual knobs look like another aftermarket job. Finally, the lack of any serial numbers probably mean the body and neck were painted and then a waterslide was added.

Now, this doesn't mean that it's not worth $900. It's worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay. Is it a genuine Fender re-issue? Doubtful, but that doesn't mean it's not a quality instrument.

Hope this helps...

72 would be a 4 bolt plate...but that doesn't make this legit.

2 knobs?

Also, looks like Basslines PUPs. Back of the neck is too pale.

Plus....the PUs do not look like they are in the '70's position. They look like the standard spacing. The bridge PU should be closer to the bridge on a real '72.

Have no idea if fake or real. Mother-of-toilet-seat pick guard & Badass bridge? that would lean towards a fake. But it sure looks nice----if it played good id buy it. Might be worth the 50 minute drive from San Luois Obispo to Santa Barbara to check it out.

Looks really fake to me, the color looks fake, the decals look fake, theres only 2 knobs. Idk everything screams Fake to me. It might not be... BUT get a serial from the guy and look it up. Find out if its MIM MIJ or MIA.

Since he says it is a "Custom built '72 Fender Jazz reissue" he is truthfully saying it is not a "real" Fender Jazz bass.

Whether it is worth $900 or not is a different story. (It's not to me.)

At least the seller isn't asking 2-3 grand for it.
