How do you get this like intense growly tone? Man! Please listen to the Tye Tribbett song "Bless the Lord (son of man)" on YouTube. When the bassist comes in it's just straight fat growl. I want that! I have a five string American standard P and a Warwick $$ Corvette four. Of tye is playing bass, I think he usually uses a Fender Lyte. But just in general, how do you get that tone!
Please no religious discussions.

| | | | Sounds like a 5 string Jazz bass with a big cut in the mids/high mids put through a nice amp and cab with some low end extension to me. |

Theres soapbars, j's and yes p's that can work great for growl. Main thing with P's is avoid any that get muddy easy and which lack any upper treble response.
Add woods like basswood, the bubinga, ovangkol, wenge combo, or mahogany with maple top.
Plug said bass into processor of choice or at least overdrive of choice, with good multiband bass eq after that. To recover any lost low bass impact and to tweak mids thru treble as desired if needed.
Play thru nice hifi rig.
I also find that some aspects of the mids can need a little boosting in some cases for better growl. And in most cases slightly rolling pup blend a little toward the bridge. Perhaps with a little bit of bass boost or a little bit of cut to treble, from your onboard eq if desired for this position. In some cases, rolling pup blend a little toward neck pup can create good darker variation. Use a little bit of bass cut if desired for this position.
Brands I like that typically do growl very well to me include BC Rich, Esp Ltd, Jackson, Ibanez, Warwick.

Thad uses a crazy pedal (stomp box) live that I haven't gotten close enough to see. But he IS unique and the only person I know to get that kinda growl and tone from a Pbass delux. Quote: |

He's sick on 4 strings.

I'm no fan of fender basses, but peep that for another example of growl. It's amazing what Pino gets from just his right hand technique. A p-bass in my hands tho, ain't worth the paper the strings came in.

I cant see it takin much more than that to get that growl, at best some DR fat beams could help.
